Blue Marine Foundation Blue Marine Foundation is dedicated to protecting our ocean and restoring it to health

Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) is a charity dedicated to restoring the ocean to health by addressing overfishing, one of the world’s biggest environmental problems. BLUE’s mission is to see at least 30% of the world’s ocean under effective protection by 2030 and the other 70% managed in a responsible way.

The High Seas Treaty is a once-in-a-generation chance to protect nearly half our planet.

In September 2025, the Treaty reached the 60 ratifications needed to trigger the countdown to becoming legally binding international law. On the 17 January 2026, the Treaty enters into force.

But we’re not done yet. More countries, including the UK must ratify the treaty so everyone plays by the same rules and ocean protection benefits all. Dive into our myth buster to learn why the high seas are so important.

Today on we are shining a spotlight on the small-scale fishers of Amorgos who have been paving the way for community led marine protection in Greece. 🐟

A decade ago, local fishers sounded the klaxon on the potential loss of their livelihoods owed to decades of overfishing in the region.

Fast forward to now where the fishers of Amorgos in partnership with NGOs, scientists and the wider community have secured FOUR no take fishing zones in the area. The Greek Prime Minister was so inspired by the story of the Amorgos fishers that he has committed to delivering ten more community led marine protection initiatives like this across Greece.

This is a story of hope, showing that fisher-led knowledge is vital in the design of protecting the ocean while ensuring traditional coastal communities can continue their traditions for generations to come.

What happens when the fish run out and the small-scale fishers are left behind?

Coast Town is a new ska shanty written by lifelong fisher Martin Yorwarth which captures the reality faced by fishers who are experiencing a loss to their livelihoods due to the unfair allocation of fishing quota.

Just 4% of fishing quota is allocated to small-scale fishers.  It’s “Normal people vs corporate power, a call for help in our last hour”

The plight faced by our fishers must be addressed by government policy.

Gulper sharks are vital for a healthy ocean, but humans are now the gulper sharks biggest threat.

Proposed laws in the Maldives could reopen shark fishing, putting this already endangered species at serious risk. ❌

URGENT UPDATE🦈 The Maldives has announced it will allow gulper shark fishing from November 2025.

Gulper sharks are endangered, slow to recover and vital to ocean health. Their loss could destabilise marine ecosystems crucial to Maldivian fisheries and food security.

The Maldives is one of only seventeen shark sanctuaries in the world and will lose its internationally recognised status, gained when all shark fishing was banned in 2010 and trade in 2011.

🐟 Tuna win! What are you going to do about it once you find out?

In a landmark ruling, the European Court of Justice has sided with Blue Marine and in our challenge against the European Commission, marking a major step forward for access to justice and ocean protection.

💥 This means the European Commission will have to review its decision to block a crucial fisheries management measure aimed at protecting Indian Ocean tuna stocks from the harmful impacts of drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs). 🌊

❌ Despite this ruling, many UK supermarkets still sell tuna caught this way and claim to be “responsible”.

📊 59% of Brits say they wouldn’t buy tuna if they knew it was caught unsustainably.

🛒 So what can you do?
✔️ Check the label.
✔️ Choose pole-and-line or FAD-free.
✔️ Ask your supermarket what they’re doing to protect the ocean.

📣 We’re calling on all UK retailers to stop selling tuna caught using drifting FADs by not entering into any new supply agreements for tuna caught in this way. It’s time to put the planet before profit. 🌍

🚨 New investigative report from Blue Marine exposes the stark contrast between the profits of many European fishing companies and the ongoing exploitation of West African crew members.

Horrendous instances of forced labour and abuse on board Chinese fishing vessels have received significant attention in recent years. However, to date, no thorough account has existed of the conditions for crew living and working on board the European tuna fishing vessels that supply UK and EU retailers with the tuna that lines their shelves.

The report amplifies the first-hand accounts of discriminatory treatment faced by many West African crew members, both on board and on shore. These issues were experienced to varying degrees on different vessels and ranged from insufficient medical care to unexplained dismissals, and from unfair employment terms to excessive working hours.

Jess Rattle, Blue Marine’s Head of Investigations and co-author of the report, said: “Some of these crew members gave decades of their lives to a fishing company before being let go without explanation, with others continuing to work gruelling hours at sea while still not being able to adequately provide for their families back home.”

As the global demand for tuna continues to grow, profits cannot be placed above the wellbeing, safety and fair pay of crew members at sea. Swipe to learn more and follow Blue Marine for updates on this work.
