➢ Beyond Conflict:
- Post-War Community Building, Recovery and Prevention
In Croatia since 1996 (just after the war). Since 2006, CFOR is active in the ‘Areas of Special State Concern’. Our forums focus on relational and economic recovery in areas devastated by war. Our work is in partnership with Association Mi and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and has had support from the European Institute for Democracy and Human rights, the Millennium Fund and Dutch, Norwegian, Belgium, Danish, and Spanish governments, and other donors. The forums (75 people) over four days) address and transform polarizations and tensions in community between Croats, Serbs and other ethnic/national backgrounds, and link the emotional and relational aspect of community recovery with economic projects and reconstruction.

-- Model: " Back to our Future: A Handbook for Post-War Recovery and Violence Prevention" From our long-term work in Croatia, (since 1996), and with support from UNHCR and the EU, we hope this model will be a useful starting point in other post-conflict communities for psychosocial recovery, community building, economic reconstruction and violence prevention

- Leadership Training to support individuals and whole communities. We focus on leadership skills for project development as well as facilitating in situations of tension and recovery, decrease polarizations and enhance initiative and cooperation among people working in Civil Society organizations and Government organisations in the areas hit hardest by war.

➢ Europe Matters:

Here is a little inspiration in these divisive times..

I love the Dalai Lama’s interpreter and his love for the Dalai Lama… the compassion and ‘mothering’ that he speaks of.

We are looking back and looking forward, as we grapple with what it takes to facilitate personal and community awareness so terribly needed in this polarised world…

We should all be alarmed and terrified. On her way to an Iftar (a breaking of the Ramadan fast) ... Arrested by the US government, by men in masks. A student, on a student visa. This is a terror tactic on the part of the government.

The US government claims that it is SHE who supports terrorism due her pro-Palestinian activism. An age-old terror tactic of authoritarian governments, designed to instil terror and to silence leaders, social activists, educators and the educated.

Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish citizen and a Muslim, was heading out to break her Ramadan fast with friends Tuesday night when she was detained by agents from the Department of Homeland Security.

This mural in Kyiv is ‘Berehynia’, a feminine spirit … she protects us... and represents a deep source of life, vitality and strength that we are encouraged to call on, personally and collectively, in times of hardship.

With gratitude and respect to our students and colleagues in Ukraine.

On this let us draw on her spirit.

‘The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent’, from Nebojša Slijepčević ... this is a powerful short film, for all of us, in our times.
Thank you Tajana for sharing it with us at CFOR - It's in the running for an Oscar for ‘Best Live Action Short'.

The story was reconstructed from passengers who were on a train stopped by the paramilitary, in an ethnic cleansing operation in 1993, in Bosnia and Herzegovina... One man, Tomo Buzov, a former JNA officer, stands up to them.

This short film which is just 13 minutes, was the actual amount of time that the train was stopped, as 19 civilians were taken off and killed.

We wanted to share it here, to invite you to take these few moments.

February 1993: Štrpci, Bosnia. Paramilitaries stop a passenger train and arrest civilians. Of the 500 or so passengers, only one man puts up resistance. This film tells the true story of the man who would not remain silent. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Film; 2025.

How are you doing out there? With all the attempts to confuse and upend our ability to discern reality, and to upend our humanity and our awareness, with bluster, lies, and time-tested authoritarian crackdown...

Let's hold on to our hats, and to one another, and grow in our awareness to not fall into the polarizations and feed the escalation of our times.
.. Sending Love

I’ve seen U.S.A.I.D. operate around the world, and it’s not woke — it’s lifesaving.

Holocaust Memorial Day, witnessing my family among the 6 million killed. I've come to realise memorials matter, for those of us upclose, and those of us at a distance.. . to ‘stop the world’… to stop replaying the demonizing and dehumanizing nightmare. A moment of prayer, reflection, and gratitude for those of us working together to build awareness and to find ways forward in these impossible times.
