Opportunity International UK offers training courses in countries including Uganda and Rwanda, providing people with skills to start their own businesses, and move away from poverty. Afua shares the story of Amama who worked as a kayayei in Accra before she took part in a skills training programme. Today, Amama is a successful businesswoman, supporting her family and employing others. KT Tunstall presents this week's BBC Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of RNID (Royal National Institute for Deaf People). The charity supports more than 18 million people in the UK who are deaf, have hearing loss or experience tinnitus. People like Charlotte, who lost hearing in both ears and found life and work overwhelming. With the help of RNID, she says her world has come alive. Ambassador and trustee for the Born Free Foundation Jenny Seagrove presents this week’s Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of the charity. The foundation was created in 1984 by the stars of the film “Born Free”, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, and works to protect lions. Jenny tells the story of young lioness Sahara, who lives in Meru National Park in the Northern Highlands of Kenya. She was a large cub when Born Free’s team spotted her, limping badly, an arrow driven straight through her hind leg. Broadcaster and vice president of The Leprosy Mission Pam Rhodes presents this week’s Radio 4 appeal on behalf of the charity. Leprosy can be cured with a mixture of antibiotics but in some places, like Africa and Asia, a lack of knowledge about the disease, poverty and stigma, mean people often hide their symptoms. Pam tells the story of one twelve-year-old girl from a rural village in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Two years ago, strange patches appeared on her skin and leprosy went on to attack her body. It was only after being diagnosed and treated at a Leprosy Mission hospital that she’s now on the road to recovery.
