Ann, took on the exhilarating Abseil at the Races challenge last year to help support people affected by cancer.

"It was so thrilling to be on the roof of the Knavesmire Stand looking out over the racecourse. The abseil team were so encouraging and I felt totally reassured even when I did have to lower myself over the edge with my legs shaking!"

So, if you’ve ever fancied reaching new heights to support people affected by cancer, give abseiling a go as part of Macmillan Raceday weekend at on Friday 12th and 13th June.

You’ll get a bird’s eye view of race course whilst you descend the 80-foot drop, and once you’ve completed the challenge, you’ll be able to enjoy a full day at the races as a county stand attendee.

Sign up before Friday 22nd May with the discount code YORK100 to register for free.

Lee from Teesside was diagnosed with blood cancer just before his 47th birthday. Since then, his whole life has changed.

The impact of his diagnosis and the side effects of treatment meant Lee couldn’t continue with his work or his passion for cycling. He shut down and silently struggled just as much with his mental health as he did with his physical diagnosis.

Lee spent the day with artist and fellow northerner and artist Mackenzie Thorpe. He shared insights into how cancer had impacted his life and what he’s doing to encourage others to speak up about their health. After hearing Lee’s story, Mackenzie created an incredible piece of artwork representing everything he had heard during their time together.

Cancer is the biggest challenge many people will ever face. It can change everything - your body, your relationships, your work, your finances and the future you imagined. Our mission is to make cancer care fairer for everyone, whoever they are and wherever they live.

We are here for you.

Getting access to the right care and support when living with cancer can often depend on who you are and where you live.

In farming and rural communities, cancer can often be harder to talk about and get support due to isolation, long travel distances for treatment, demanding work patterns and limited local services.

The Farming Community Network is delivering vital work to address these barriers through its Rural Communities Cancer Project, providing trusted and tailored support directly in farming, rural and migrant worker communities across the UK.

The team behind The Farming Community Network have worked together with Macmillan, people with lived experience of cancer and other agricultural organisations to launch initiatives like its ‘Nip it in the Bud’ campaign which focuses on promoting early detection and screening.

The campaign brings the topic of cancer into spaces such as agricultural shows and farmers' marts, sharing real stories from farmers who have been affected by cancer from across the UK.

Its aim is to challenge stigma, normalise conversations about cancer, improve awareness and highlight options for screening and support for anyone who may have worries about possible symptoms of cancer.

The team at The Farming Community Network are doing incredible work to ensure fairer cancer care, no matter who you are or where you live.

That’s why they’ve been selected as finalists for the Community Impact Award at our 2026 Professional Excellence Awards taking place later this week.

Congratulations to The Farming Community Network team and all the individuals committed to making change for farming and rural communities across the UK. 💚

Finalists for the Community Impact Award! ✨

We’re proud to celebrate Calderdale Cancer Aware as finalists in the Professionals Excellence Awards, for the Community Impact Award.

In Calderdale, too many people are diagnosed with cancer at a late stage, with stark health inequalities across the community. This team is working to change that by supporting people to seek help sooner, normalise the topic of cancer within seldom heard communities, take part in screening, and access vital services.

By working in partnership with Halifax Opportunities Trust, they’re building trusted relationships in some of Calderdale’s most diverse and underserved communities.

From mosque drop-ins to “Chat & Chai” sessions, their culturally sensitive approach is breaking down barriers and opening lifesaving conversations.

“We take healthcare services to places where people feel safe and comfortable, this builds trust and encourages early conversations.” explains Cancer Community Engagement Manager Rachel Porter.

A huge well done to the team for their incredible impact! 👏

We would like to wish a Happy Easter to anyone celebrating this weekend! 💚

🌼 National Garden Scheme gardens are opening this week! 🌼

The National Garden Scheme has raised an incredible £20 million for Macmillan Cancer Support through garden openings, tea, coffee and plenty of cake - their gardens are the perfect place to enjoy a spring day out.

Visiting a National Garden Scheme garden is great for your health and wellbeing, and is inspiring too. With delicious tea, cake and children going free at most gardens, it makes a really affordable day out. What’s more, your visit supports some of the UK’s best-loved nursing and health charities, including Macmillan!

With Mother’s Day this weekend, why not take your mum, a mother figure, or someone special in your life? And if this time of year feels difficult, a quiet wander among spring flowers can offer a gentle moment of peace.

Everyone should have access to the information, support and care they need which is why we’re committed to working closely with diverse communities like The Dawoodi Bohras. In the UK, they are a 5,000‑strong Muslim community with a long history of healthcare advocacy and they recently held events across 10 UK cities for World Cancer Day, to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support people living with cancer.

Through their global philanthropic initiative, Project Rise, volunteers hosted bake sales, awareness talks, support groups and educational sessions, all aimed at breaking down barriers to healthcare access and raising vital funds for Macmillan.

Many members of the community work within the NHS, and some of them delivered targeted talks on routine screenings, healthy lifestyle choices and tackling stigma around early diagnosis.

Dr Mariyah Esmailji, Consultant Radiologist & Cancer Imaging Specialist, and member of the Dawoodi Bohra community in Birmingham said “World Cancer Day is not just a date on the calendar for us. It serves as a catalyst for long‑term action. By organising cancer awareness programmes simultaneously across our centres nationwide, we created a strong and lasting message within our community and beyond that early action saves lives. Our aim is to ensure that every individual feels supported and heard in their health journey.”

Kutbuddin Raja, from Bradford, was diagnosed with testicular cancer at 27. Now 58, he shared: “I would say go to your doctor straight away. The minute you feel a lump, just go. I know men are scared, but just go - I left it for a few months before I went, but I should have gone straight away."

Becky Turner Knowles, Relationship Fundraising Manager at Macmillan, attended some of the events: “Witnessing the Dawoodi Bohra community unite around Macmillan fundraising has been both a pleasure and a privilege. Their generosity ensures we can continue providing the best cancer care the UK has to offer, whoever and wherever people are.”

Our partnership with the Dawoodi Bohras is a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared purpose. 💚

We are saddened to learn of the recent passing of Dr Aysha Raza (pictured - right). She was a huge advocate of communities working together for positive change and was a great support of The Dawoodi Bohras.

Cancer Community Meet-ups take place every other Wednesday at 11am, at Hollywood Bowl Bradford. Enjoy a free game of bowling and light refreshments - you’re welcome to bring a friend or family member along with you too.

These Meet-ups provide a relaxed and comfortable space for people with cancer and their loved ones to meet up with other people in their local community who may be going through similar experiences.

The idea behind Meet-ups is simple. Being around others who understand what you’re going through is an incredible source of support. Just knowing you’re not alone can provide reassurance and a sense of belonging. Unlike a more formal support group, Meet-ups have no agenda, no requirement to sign up, and no requirement to speak about cancer or even to speak at all.

Join us this World Cancer Day (Wednesday 4th February) for an informative session where we’ll explore why cancer awareness matters and how we can all play a role in making a difference.

You’ll hear from experts, healthcare professionals, and people living with cancer about the importance of early awareness, common signs and symptoms, Macmillan’s services and the support available for you and your loved ones.

Whether you, someone in your family, a friend, or a colleague has been affected by cancer, or you simply want to learn more, this session aims to leave you inspired and informed.

With 1 in 2 people diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, it’s more important than ever to talk openly and raise awareness.
