💐 Congratulations to students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland receiving their A-level results today. We also congratulate students in Scotland, who received their Higher results on 4 August.

These results represent considerable dedication, perseverance and achievement, and we send our very best wishes to everyone as they take the next steps in their education, training and careers.

A-level Mathematics remains the most popular A-level subject, with entries reaching a record 115,380, an increase of 2.89% compared with 2025. 42.5% of students taking A-level Mathematics achieved grades A* or A.

Entries in Further Mathematics also rose by 8.5% in 2026, underlining the continued strength of interest in studying mathematics at an advanced level.

✨ The 2026 Joint LMS/IMA takes place on Monday 21 September at De Morgan House, London and online, marking 200 years of the birth of Bernhard Riemann.

Bernhard Riemann (1826–1866), a student of Gauss and Weber, made far-reaching contributions to mathematics, revolutionising the study of complex function theory (Riemann surfaces, Riemann mapping theorem) and geometry (the subject now known as Riemannian geometry).

The aim of this joint LMS/IMA meeting is to bring together researchers from across the mathematical sciences to celebrate Riemann’s bicentenary and to explore the continuing impact of his ideas on modern mathematics, including developments in geometry, analysis, topology, number theory, and theoretical physics.

Applications for the 2026-27 Round of LMS Early Career Fellowships are now being taken.

This Fellowship lasts between 3 and 6 months to mathematicians who have recently or will shortly receive their PhD.

The award will be calculated at £1,820 per month plus £800 allowance for relocation/collaboration visits. Applicants must demonstrate strong research links outside the institution where they received their PhD. This can be demonstrated, for example, by changing institutions or by making collaborative visits during the fellowship. The fellowships may be held at one or more institutions.

These Fellowships are partially supported by Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research through the UKRI/EPSRC Additional Funding Programme for Mathematical Sciences.

We are delighted to announce the next round of Mathematics in Africa Grants, where a maximum of £2,000 partial funding is available for applicants based anywhere in the world for any maths activities, such as events, conferences or research, that are taking place in Africa.

We are inviting UK-based institutions or consortia to submit proposals to host the LMS Mathematical Symposia from 2031-2035.

The LMS Mathematical Symposia are a well-established and recognised series of international research meetings, which provide an excellent opportunity to explore an area of research in depth, to learn of new developments, and to instigate links between different branches of mathematics.

The Symposia offer opportunities to increase and celebrate equality, diversity, inclusivity, accessibility and sustainability within the mathematical sciences community. To ensure that all UK institutions have the opportunity to benefit from hosting the LMS Mathematical Symposia, the Society encourages applications from universities or consortia of universities that have not traditionally hosted such events.

The UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences is inviting expressions of interest to join new KE Hub IS-8 Community Teams.

These teams will bring together experts from academia, business, industry, charity, and government to help maximise mathematical sciences knowledge exchange opportunities across the IS-8 Areas of the Modern Industrial Strategy, and UKRI’s Wider Priorities.
