“Today, insects are feared or ignored, despite being vital to our survival. ‘First Sun’ encourages us to recognise the divine in what we might otherwise overlook” - Monira Al Qadiri 🪲

Monira Al Qadiri’s ‘First Sun’ is a majestic painted aluminium sculpture currently on show in Central Park NYC and soon to debut in Toronto’s upcoming Thelatfoundation Art Trail.

Towering at an impressive 17 feet and shimmering in purple and green hues, the sculpture reflects Al Qadiri’s interest in how humanity explores the unknown through science, religion, mythology and art.

Language connects us, and culture brings us together. 🌍

Today is . As highlighted by the United Nations, languages shape how we connect, learn, and understand one another – and multilingualism plays a vital role in building more inclusive societies.

Recently, at Artichoke, we took one of our projects global. As part of the British Council’s UK/Brazil Season of Culture, in partnership with Instituto Guimarães Rosa , presented 16 powerful artworks across the United Kingdom and Brazil in response to the theme It’s Not Easy Being Green.

For one member of our team, this moment was especially meaningful. Our Senior Communications Manager, Zoë Da Poian, is from Brazil, and for the first time since joining Artichoke, she was able to work in her mother tongue. From translating digital content to interpreting live conversations and supporting public events, Zoë helped bridge cultures, demonstrating how language fosters connection, understanding, and inclusion.

“My interests in language and art have intersected for many years, so having the opportunity to engage with Brazilian artists, speak my mother tongue, and work across both cultures was really special. Anyone who speaks another language will know it’s like tapping into a different part of your brain – it’s something you have to keep exercising!” –

Through our Learning & Participation programme, students in Brazil and the UK explored themes around sustainability and created new artworks that appeared on billboards in both countries last month.
