May is skin cancer awareness month - stay safe in the sun!🌞

During skin cancer awareness month, we are encouraging everyone to take simple steps to stay safe in the sun and recognise the early signs of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the UK, with around 16,700 new cases of melanoma (a type of skin cancer) diagnosed every year and over 150,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer diagnosed annually.* Most skin cancers are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or sunbeds.

The good news is that around 86% of melanoma skin cancer cases are preventable, and early detection greatly improves the chances of successful treatment.*

It is also important to highlight that younger children are more vulnerable to the effects of the sun, and sunburn in childhood has been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer later in life.

By taking a few simple steps, you can reduce your risk and help others do the same. Help spread the word with you family and friends by sharing this post.

If you have any concerns about your skin, don’t wait – speak to your GP.

This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week 💜

We know that living with cancer can be a rollercoaster at times, and this can take a toll on a person's mental health. Not only for patients but for loved ones too. This is a normal response to a very stressful life experience.

Whilst everyone's experience is different, these recommendations may help support your mental health through your cancer journey:
💜Talk openly about your feelings with trusted people and healthcare professionals
💙Join local support groups
💚Engage in creative activities like art or music
💛Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques
🩷Maintain regular and healthy habits like sleep and exercise
❤️Explore complimentary therapies such as massage or yoga

Don't hesitate to seek professional help from counsellors or your medical team if you are feeling overwhelmed or notice symptoms of depression or anxiety.

For more information on mental health and cancer visit the Cancer Research UK website: https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/coping/mental-health-cancer

Put your hands together for the wonderful Simon who will be taking on the Belfast Marathon today, in honour of his wife Erin.🙌💜

"This will be for my beautiful wife Erin who was sadly diagnosed with Gestational Trophoblastic Disease in July 2024 and has been closely monitored by doctors from Charing Cross Hospital in London. After giving birth to our two beautiful girls, Ebony and Rhea, our family is now complete. Later this year Erin will be having a hysterectomy so that this disease can no longer spread or turn cancerous. I can't imagine how this must feel for Erin or any woman in that matter.

So my way of showing support is that I will run the 26.2 miles of the Belfast marathon in hope to raise funds that will support and help research in immunotherapy treatment towards this type of cancer and for the continued support from CTRT charity.""

A big thank you, Simon for your support and hard work in fundraising for our GTD trial. We wish you the best of luck today and will be cheering you on!

We focus on the cancers that the big charities don't.

CTRT raises funds for the cancers that rarely receive funding but are equally important including; Gestational Trophoblastic Disease, gynaecological, testicular, uveal melanoma, prostate, bladder, stomach and kidney cancers.

Through our research we are able to improve outcomes in cancers that were previously not easily treatable, reduce the need for chemotherapy and offer treatments with less side effects. 💜

We also help to develop a new generation of diagnostic tests and tools to aid decision making and enable patients to get the right treatment at the right time.

We aim to help patients to live longer, improve their quality of life, and better manage their treatment.💜

Help us in our mission and donate what you can towards our research https://donate.cancertreatment.org.uk/

Thank you for your support.💜
