Let's Go Zero

Let's Go Zero Schools working together to be by 2030.
👩‍🏫 🌱♻️ 🚴💡🌍
The UK-wide schools campaign. Schools + students = climate action

Let’s Go Zero is the national campaign uniting teachers, pupils, parents and their schools as they all work together to be carbon zero by 2030. From Inverness to Plymouth, Liverpool to Brighton, school leaders are standing alongside students and taking action to tackle the climate crisis. Every school that signs up is pledging to work towards a more sustainable future while calling for much-needed government support to help all schools reach their carbon zero goals. By raising our voices together, we are showing the overwhelming support for zero carbon schools up and down the UK. Together we’re harnessing the power of schools and young people to drive change and spark climate action in communities across the country, reducing emissions, increasing biodiversity and safeguarding our planet for future generations.

We've very proud of all the projects that our 2026 OVO Foundation Nature Prize Community winners have achieved this year!

It's been incredibly inspiring seeing projects like The Wheel-barrow Gardens Project, which saw Whitefield Primary use its Nature Prize money to create container wheel-barrow gardens for each class. Students were responsible for designing the gardens, researching which plants should go together, how to plant them, and what care they need. This resulted in a mix of vibrant wheelbarrow gardens planted with a variety of vegetables and flowers.

Congratulations to all of our winners:
Bluecoat Primary School
Christ the King Sixth Form
Co-op Academy Woodlands Primary School
Co-op Delius Academy
St Matthew’s Primary School

The perfect pairing - Nature and the curriculum.

Our 2026 OVO Foundation Nature Prize winners in Green Skills have used their prize money to teach their students skills in plant life cycles, food origins, tool safety and garden maintenance, with a focus on teamwork and communication.

Projects like The Whole School Greening project at Weelsby Academy used the funding to purchase 16 planters, installed along the school fence to create a living wall, as part of a wider whole school eco project.

A dedicated group of students took the lead in planting up the wall and now carry out its daily watering and maintenance, taking real ownership of its upkeep.

Congratulations to all of our winners:

Alford Primary School
Blaise High School
Christchurch Academy Birkenhead

We've loved seeing photos of all our 2026 OVO Foundation Nature Prize winners in Adaptation and Resilience coming in!

And we're really proud to support projects like The Gravel Garden Project, which saw The Woodroffe School create a dry gravel garden after concerns around overheating, drought and the need to save water. The gravel has helped rainwater seep into the soil, reducing soil erosion and managing flow rates from hard surfaces in times of heavy rain.

Congratulations to all of our winners:

No matter where you are on your sustainability journey we are very proud to be part of 3 fantastic Department for Education commissioned programmes offering free support to nurseries, schools and colleges.

The National Education Nature Park programme empowers children and young people to make a positive difference to both their own and nature's future. Go on a journey to connect with nature, get to know your outdoor space and transform your grounds for both people and wildlife. This free programme provides educators with curriculum-linked resources, support and guidance to embed climate and nature into everyday teaching and learning, in a way that suits your setting and learners.

We are Climate Ambassadors help nurseries, schools and colleges in England to develop and implement a climate action plan – a government expectation for all education settings. DBS-checked and trained volunteer Climate Ambassadors are here for every setting, member of staff and learner. They bring enthusiasm, expertise and skills from a range of relevant industries to support early years settings, schools and colleges on their sustainability journey.

Sustainability Support for Education helps all education settings progress their sustainability journey, outside of the classroom. They provide free, recommended actions with quality-assured resources from expert partners, giving you what you need to put your climate action plan into action.

These programmes work alongside Let's Go Zero Climate Action Advisors to support schools, colleges and nurseries to lower their emissions and become better places to work, learn and play. There’s help to develop a climate action plan and support to access funding for green projects, from solar panels to uniform swap shops. Climate Action Advisors are on hand with practical solutions and ideas tailored to your setting’s needs.

We’ve had the hottest summer on record and education settings really felt the impact - it’s a reminder of why every setting should have a climate action plan. Free support is available to nurseries, schools and colleges and is provided by Department for Education through:

Sustainability Support for Education: provides free, recommended actions with quality-assured resources from expert partners, giving you what you need to put your climate action plan into action.

We are Climate Ambassadors: provides access to on-the-ground volunteer Climate Ambassadors and regional networks to support the development and delivery of impactful climate action plans.

The National Education Nature Park: provides curriculum-linked resources and practical activities to connect children and young people with nature on their learning sites and engage them in supporting their local environment. Participation in the Nature Park is a great way to add meaningful education, skills and biodiversity action to your plan.

These programmes also work with Let's Go Zero Climate Action Advisors, who support schools, colleges and nurseries to lower their emissions and become better places to work, learn and play.

"If we didn't have the guidance, then I would have no idea where to start"

Rob Haigh, Sustainability Lead and Forest School Practitioner, shares how having a Climate Action Plan has helped his school make meaningful changes for its pupils 💚

With the support of their dedicated climate action advisor, Aurora Trujillo, the school developed a Climate Action Plan to allow their pupils thrive at school.

Together, they were able to explore funding opportunities, improve behaviour in the classroom and implement ambitious ideas to make their setting a happier and healthier learning environment.

What do schools gain from taking climate action? And what’s stopping them from doing more?

Last night, we brought together educators, sector partners and government figures at our office to launch the findings of two major pieces of independent research, commissioned by Let’s Go Zero and carried out by researchers at UCL Institute of Education and the University of York.

The research explored the benefits of climate action beyond cutting emissions, and the barriers that make it difficult for schools to prioritise sustainability.

UCL found that climate action can have wide-reaching benefits for education settings:

🌱 89% of schools said it made their environment more comfortable and engaging for staff and students
💷 67% said it helped them make financial savings
🤝 79% said it strengthened their connection with their local community
🎓 93% agreed that sustainability work helped students develop transferable skills such as leadership and teamwork

But the University of York research found that despite these benefits, climate action remains a low priority for many school leaders — largely because it isn’t yet embedded in accountability, funding, legislation or leadership training.

At Let’s Go Zero, we’ve supported thousands of schools, colleges and nurseries to overcome these barriers and experience the benefits of climate action first-hand. The findings reinforce the need to make sustainability easier to prioritise, and to ensure settings have the support they need to become happier, healthier places to work and learn.

...It's ! 🎉

Team Modeshift supports education settings to create environments where staff, pupils, and visitors travel safely, confidently, and enjoyably — and we're delighted to have them as part of the Let's Go Zero coalition.

Hear from Steph, their National Programme Manager, who explains how your school, college or nursery can encourage active travel this September.

They have so many free resources to get you started throughout the month, as well as activity ideas for this year's World Car Free Day, which takes place on 22nd September 🚗

You can find everything you need at https://bit.ly/3UOgeBq. We hope to see lots of Let's Go Zero schools pledging and spreading the word.

✔️ Biodiversity
✔️ Climate education
✔️ Reducing emissions

Our dedicated team of Climate Action Advisors can help build a tailored Climate Action Plan that fits your setting's specific needs, all for free. We're proud to work alongside the Department for Education, National Education Nature Park, Sustainability Support for Education and We are Climate Ambassadors towards our shared goal of creating happier and healthier schools.
