What are CPCs and why could they be key to cure?

Dr Sandrine Roulland explains CPCs – commonly known as “Cancer Precursor Cells” which are becoming increasingly referred to as “Cancer Persistor Cells.”

These are a small group of cells that can remain in the body after treatment, which researchers believe may be one of the reasons follicular lymphoma can come back later.

Understanding these cells – what they look like, how they survive and how they behave – could help us find ways to stop relapse from happening in the first place.

That’s why this area of research matters so much.

At the Follicular Lymphoma Foundation, we’re supporting research to better understand CPCs – because targeting the cells that drive relapse is a critical step towards cure.

Could follicular lymphoma be curable for some patients?

New long-term research (15+ years follow-up) suggests that around one-third of patients treated with standard therapy may never relapse, with relapses becoming rare after 10 years.

In a recent interview hosted by the FLF's Dr Mitchell Smith, Prof Jonathan Friedberg explains why this could represent a shift in how we think about FL and why caution is still essential.

In response to these findings, we’ve also developed an article, supported by FL patient and advocate Robert McEachern, to help put these findings into context.

Today is Blood Cancer Awareness Day, and we’re sharing Lauren’s story.

This year, Lauren, from California, was diagnosed with stage 4 follicular lymphoma after noticing swollen lymph nodes and undergoing a series of tests and biopsies.

“I found out I had stage four follicular lymphoma a few weeks before my 37th birthday.”

Recently engaged to her partner Michael, Lauren is now focusing on her treatment and health, supported by her mum, her friends and family, and her little dog George.

This short clip from our recent webinar: What No-one tells you about clinical trials and why it matters for your care, features Beth Faiman, a research nurse at Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center.

She was joined by Dr Mitchell Smith (FLF) and David Harrison a patient living with FL, who is currently taking part in a clinical trial. Where she talks about the need for trials to find new treatments.

If you missed the session or would like to watch it again, the full webinar recording is now available via our website: https://www.theflf.org/previous-webinar/webinar-what-no-one-tells-you-about-clinical-trials-and-why-it-matters-for-your-care/

Understanding lymphoma at a deeper level could help shape the future of treatment.

In this video, Professor Mina Xu and Dr Coraline Mlynarczyk explain how a powerful novel technology called spatial transcriptomics helps researchers look closely at what’s happening inside cells and their immediate environment. It shows which genes are “on” or “off”, what types of cells are present (cancerous and healthy) and how they interact within the rest of the tissue.

By building a clearer picture of how lymphoma develops and changes over time, this research may help guide more personalised treatments for patients in the future.

⏰ Don't forget to join our next free webinar 'What no one tells you about clinical trials and why it matters for your care'.

Over the past week, we’ve been sharing myth‑busting posts for tackling some of the most common misconceptions about clinical trials. If those posts raised questions, or left you wanting to know more, this webinar is for you.

Join us for a clear, supportive conversation with clinical experts and someone living with FL, focused on what clinical trials really involve, why they matter, and what taking part is really like.

One of the most persistent myths about clinical trials is that participants are used as guinea pigs, subjected to untested drugs with no idea of what might happen. This could not be further from the truth!

By the time a treatment reaches a clinical trial involving patients, it has already been studied extensively in the lab. Every trial must go through strict regulatory approval and independent ethical review before it can begin.

If you take part:

✔️ You’ll know exactly what’s involved before you agree
✔️ You can withdraw at any time
✔️ You’ll be closely monitored throughout

Many people think clinical trials are only for when options run out. In reality, they can be relevant at every stage of follicular lymphoma:

✨ At diagnosis
✨ During watch and wait
✨ During treatment
✨ In remission

Some trials are even designed specifically for earlier stages, which means the earlier you explore them, the more options you may have.

Clinical trials aren’t the end of the road. For many people, they’re part of the journey from the very beginning.

Today, on International Clinical Trials Awareness Day, we're sharing Brandon's story.

Brandon, 40 from Northern California, first shared his FL story back in December 2025. After learning his FL had relapsed, he joined a clinical trial at Stanford University.

His journey hasn't been easy, but the trial bought him hope. Today his scans show no evidence of FL and his focus is now on recovery.

When it comes to clinical trials, we often hear the question "what if I just get a placebo?”. It's a common worry, but in follicular lymphoma, it is rarely how trials work.

Follicular lymphoma has multiple proven treatments. That changes everything. When an effective treatment already exists, this is used as a comparison.

Today, trials are asking: “Can we do better than what we already have?” - whether that’s a new approach or combining existing treatments to improve outcomes.

And you’ll always know exactly what’s involved before you agree to anything.

Clinical trials aren’t about going without treatment. They’re about finding what works best.
