This , we’re partnering with Fifth Sense, the charity for people affected by smell and taste disorders, to raise awareness of smell impairment.

, the inability to detect smells, is one such condition. It can be acquired through head injuries, illnesses such as colds, flu or COVID-19, medication or treatments, conditions such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, and lots more. It can also be congenital where people are born without a sense of smell.

It’s estimated that as many as 5% of people in the UK are living with anosmia and as much as 22% of the general adult population have some degree of olfactory dysfunction, yet there are very few treatments, not enough research into the causes, and a lack of knowledge amongst health and social care professionals. By raising awareness, we can all help ensure that those living with a taste or smell disorder have a say and more choice in their health care.

The Advocacy Project recently received free training from Fifth Sense to help our staff understand and recognise the impact of smell and taste disorders. It was a shock to discover how many of us have been impacted either personally or through work. Learning more about how we can support those who live with these disorders was really valuable.

We're proud to support to help transform society’s understanding of these under-recognised sensory impairments and to give our senses of smell and taste the attention they deserve 💚

This week is , an important week which aims to provide a platform to share information about cervical screening, prevention and awareness.

At The Advocacy Project, we help people speak up and make decisions about their health, well-being and social care. As part of this, we work with people with learning disabilities and other organisations to identify health inequalities and reduce people’s barriers to healthcare.

Equality of access to information is key to the prevention and early detection of cervical cancer. Our 'Cancer - Screen - Protect - Detect' project improves access to cancer screening for people with learning disabilities through identifying and reducing obstacles to screening and support services. It supports better access to many cancer screening services, including cervical cancer, and uses a peer support model to host face-to-face community events.

has been a wonderful week to celebrate the work of trustees across the UK and the impact they have on the charitable sector 🎉 .

It's been fantastic to hear from so many about their roles, and how and why they became a trustee. Hopefully it's a source of inspiration for many this week. As one of our trustees said:

"As a trustee, you have this amazing opportunity to share your skills and knowledge outside of the workplace and have an impact on people’s lives. Being a trustee is something I draw positive energy from every day"

We're proud of our trustee recruitment process and the diversity of our board, who come with experiences from many different walks of life. We know this is critical in order to fully represent the communities that we're here to serve ❤️

Thank you International Stress Management Association UK for helping us all think about how we can improve wellbeing for everyone, starting in the workplace 🫶

We've loved seeing the posts shared this and learning from others so that we can keep improving too.

We know that having a say in decisions that affect you is vital for positive mental health. To deliver on our vision to give everyone a voice, must be embedded in all our work ❤️

What a lovely week of raising awareness of advocacy and all the amazing organisations showing their impact and why advocacy works🫶

We're proud to be part of a community enabling everyone to have a voice and be heard. So many individuals and organisations sharing what advocacy means to them and videos of service users and staff telling their stories - a wonderful window into what advocacy looks like 'in real life'.

It's great to think that there will be people out there who leave this week knowing a little bit more about advocacy and the difference it makes to us all 😊

You might know a lot about us already, but you can find out more about all the strands of our work on our website: https://bit.ly/3XQp4fC. Our teams are here to help.

Thanks to NDTi - National Development Team for Inclusion - NDTil Development Team for Inclusion for a great week 🎉
