BBC The Engineers: Lunar Exploration.

Each summer, the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 holds an Albertopolis event in partnership with the BBC World Service bringing together three ground-breaking engineers and a public audience.

This year, the event focused on how several of the world’s leading space agencies are working together with private enterprise on a project that aims to put astronauts on the moon within two years.

Panellists included:
Howard Hu, Orion Programme Manager at NASA
Sara Pastor, Chief Engineer at the ESA Ihab Gateway
Libby Jackson, Head of Exploration at the U.K. Space Agency

John Lavery MVO MBA, CEO, 1851 Royal Commission said: “Lunar exploration is on the precipice of major changes so this discussion could not have been more perfectly timed. I’m thrilled we will hear insights from the worlds leading mind on the subject.”

The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 is delighted to have played a small part in bringing this amazing project to the skies. The flying classroom not only provides a unique and innovative experience to those studying at university but now has the ability to share that experience across the UK education environment, hopefully inspiring many young people to consider taking STEM subjects or consider a career in engineering, science or technology. ✈️

For more than 100 years, scientists have puzzled over the Elgin Reptiles – unusual fossils that exist as cavities hidden within rocks. Now, thanks to modern technology that is advancing the field of palaeontology, Dr Davide Foffa (1851 Research Fellow Alumni) is uncovering the secrets of these ancient animals and the ecosystems in which they lived.
