History remembers the people who refused to stay silent. Jimmy is one of them.

He denounced Chinese communism, defended the rule of law, and gave Hong Kong a free press, knowing exactly what it would cost him.

"I believe that if I do the right thing, the strength will come." — Jimmy Lai

Today marks 37 years since the Tiananmen Square massacre. Its ripple effects continue.

It was a lightning rod for Jimmy Lai: the moment when his career shifted from fashion to journalism and defending democracy.

In 1989, Jimmy Lai helped fund a rescue network that carried many protesters and dissidents to safety. One of them was Arthur Liu, a student leader on Beijing's "most wanted" list. Liu fled to Hong Kong and eventually made it to America, where he built a new life. This year, his daughter Alysa won Olympic gold for Team USA.

Jimmy Lai gave others their freedom. Today, he has spent nearly 6 years in prison for defending Hong Kong's freedom.

On NEWSMAX, Claire Lai explained why her father founded Apple Daily, and why he never backed down as the pressure mounted.

"The more pressure they got, whether it's from friends turning away or from ads falling or even from firebombs outside the house, the more he knew he would take it in stride because he knew he was doing the right thing." — Claire Lai

"In the offices of Apple Daily there used to be a banner.

It said: 'Colleagues, you've worked hard.' And indeed they did.

But perhaps today I can take the opportunity to say: Daddy, you've worked hard.

I too believe there are some worthy but impossible fights.

Securing your freedom, however, is both worthy and possible."

— Claire Lai, accepting Freedom House's 2026 Freedom Award on behalf of her father, Jimmy Lai

"A new law had recently been proposed: Now, a person accused of a crime in Hong Kong could be sent to the mainland for trial and punishment.

About two million of Hong Kong’s seven million residents took to the streets in protest.

Jimmy Lai went to the front line, and his presence was noted by every journalist and camera in sight.

Near the end of the evening, I gathered the courage to ask what I think everyone else was also wondering. 'Why do you do this, Jimmy?' Why did he take such risks?

He looked at me, pellucid and unguarded. 'It’s just me,' he said. 'It’s who I am. What can I do?'"

The imprisoned newspaperman’s ‘will to do right’ has always been his driving force.
