Innovative Financing in Maritime – WISTA UK Event Highlights
On 11 February 2026, WISTA UK was delighted to host a timely discussion at Watson Farley & Williams on how maritime finance is evolving beyond traditional bank lending.
As regulatory pressures increase and geopolitical uncertainty continues, shipping companies are actively exploring debt capital markets (DCM) and securitisation structures as part of a more diversified funding strategy.
Key themes from the evening included:
• Tradeable bond issuances and MTN programmes opening access to broader institutional investors
• Securitisation structures unlocking liquidity from vessel and lease portfolios
• The importance of scale, preparation and specialist expertise
• The impact of regulatory capital requirements and geopolitical developments
• The critical role of legal structuring, particularly around bankruptcy remoteness and enforcement
These structures are not suitable for every market participant. However, they are increasingly becoming part of the strategic toolkit for larger shipping companies, particularly those pursuing fleet modernisation and sustainability initiatives.
WISTA UK is proud to create space for informed, practical discussions on the financial frameworks that underpin our industry’s future.
Chair and keynote speaker: Katie Shiels, Senior Associate, Watson Farley & Williams
