CADETS IN THE COMMUNITY

The Air Training Corps is the community based cadet force within the RAF Air Cadets. As such we have always been involved in the local community since our formation in 1941.

Cadets are involved in parades, especially on Remembrance Sunday, often representing the RAF as there are no active stations in Surrey now.

Cadets support local and military charities, helping fundraising events and the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal each year.

And Cadets support civic events, providing a guard of honour for guests or as the band playing music to entertain. They have even been known to help with sporting events such as local half marathons, directing runners and providing water.

We remain a proud part of the local community in Surrey.

đź—“ A Date for the Diary - Cadet Week Open Day

229 (Farnham) Sqn ATC are holding an Open Day on Saturday 10 October. If you are looking to join, the details are below.

229 (Farnham) Squadron will be open from 1000–1400 hrs for our Open Day for new recruits.

Throughout the day you’ll be able to:
Meet our cadets and staff
See demonstrations of key RAF Air Cadet activities including drill, first aid, radio communications, fieldcraft, STEM challenges, leadership tasks and aviation‑themed activities including our VR flight sim.
Get hands-on with some of the equipment and activities.
Explore what life as an Air Cadet is really like.

We’ll also be running two New Recruit Presentations for parents and young people:
1100 hrs
1300 hrs

These sessions explain how the RAF Air Cadets works, what opportunities are available, and how to join. You’re welcome to attend the demonstrations first and then the presentation — or the other way around. There’s no need to stay for the whole day; drop in at the time that suits you.

🚀🚀 National Cadet Week - Launch Day 🚀🚀

Today is the launch of the first National Cadet Week. A week dedicated to celebrating what is great about our Cadet organisations.

We will be proudly showing off the RAF Air Cadets during the week, sharing what our squadrons are doing. Each day is themed as follows:

- Tuesday - Cadets in the Community
- Wednesday - Celebrating our Volunteers
- Thursday - Cadets Save Lives
- Friday - Skills for Life
- Saturday - Open Day (at selected units)
- Sunday - A wrap up of the week.

Congratulations to Cadet Flight Sergeant Manalo of 1075 (Camberley) Squadron who last night was presented with the Best Tr-Service Cadet of Surrey award by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey.

The award was made possible with thanks from Cadet Direct, who also presented Cdt FS Manalo with a gift voucher.

The Lord Lieutenant also recognised two of our Wing Staff Officers, presenting Squadron Leaders Bromley and Machin with Certificates of Meritorious Service alongside other Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers and Reservists from the County.

🏆 DRILL COMPETITION WINNERS 🏆

Today Surrey Wing held our foot drill competition postponed from earlier in the year due to the heat wave. 261 (Guildford) Squadron took the Croydon Times Trophy (Overall Winners) home again, with 1349 (Woking) Squadron runners-up behind them. Both squadrons will now go on to represent the Wing at the Region Competition in October.

261 Sqn also won the trophy for Best Uniform, with Cadet Flight Sergeant Manalo of 1075 (Camberley) Squadron taking the trophy for Best Drill Instructor.

REMEMBERING THE FEW

Today a group of cadets and volunteers gathered at the RAF Shelter in Brookwood Military Cemetery to commemorate the Battle of Britain.

The Battle of Britain is remembered on the closest Sunday to 15 September (Battle of Britain Day). On the 15 September 1940 the Luftwaffe launched a massive assault in the skies over Britain, but after heavy fighting the RAF inflicted a decisive defeat.

Our cadets remembered some of the 544 RAF aircrew and 312 RAF personnel killed on the ground during the battle by planting crosses at some of their graves.

NEW OFFICER 🫡

Congratulations to Acting Pilot Officer Holdstock who recently passed a commissioning board interview at Region to confirm his appointment.

At 19, he is one of the first senior cadets to take the opportunity to commission before the age of 20 within Surrey Wing since the rule change.
