Dialogue Society

Dialogue Society The work done by relevant professionals and volunteers within all these sectors can have a significant impact on the character of society.

Founded in 1999, the Dialogue Society is a registered Charity which aims to advance social cohesion by connecting communities, promoting engagement and facilitating dialogue. Our Approach

At the Dialogue Society, we understand dialogue to consist of meaningful interaction and exchange between people of different groups (social, cultural, political and religious) who come together through various

kinds of conversations or activities with a view to increased understanding. Target Audience

Overall, the Dialogue Society’s target audience is a proportional cross-section of people from different backgrounds living and working within the regions in which we operate. In addition to bringing people together across cultural and religious lines, we are concerned to bring together people from the following sectors: academia, stakeholders, community and media. However, while each sector has a role to play in helping society to develop in a cohesive and empathic direction, channels of communication between them can be lacking and they can easily become insular. We aim to bring the different sectors into a creative, constructive dialogue that will inform and enhance the work of all. Areas of Interest

The Dialogue Society is interested in facilitating dialogue on the following areas of interest:

Dialogue theories and practice
Community cohesion and multiculturalism
Identity, integration and citizenship
Family, education and youth
Media, culture and communication
Human rights and civil liberties
Theology and religious studies
World cultures and societies
Peace-building and conflict resolution

Our Method

The Dialogue Society seeks to contribute to social cohesion at three different levels: directly bringing different social groups together, empowering others to do the same, and contributing to the development of thought on dialogue and community building.

Dialogue Society Manchester visited Afzal Khan MP at the British Muslim Heritage Centre.

We had a thoughtful and informative conversation about our work across Manchester and our plans for the future. We discussed bringing our award-winning Life of a Chickpea project to more local schools, creating opportunities for young people to meet community leaders, organising community trust roundtables and developing future events.

Our sincere thanks to Afzal Khan MP for his warm welcome, time and valuable guidance, and to our Manchester team for their continued commitment and hard work.

It was great to share some of Dialogue Society’s projects, learn more about local opportunities, and get ideas and advice from Councillor Dr. Hussain Salem.

We had a warm and productive conversation about the projects the Dialogue Society is working on and the goals we are setting for the months to come, and how we can keep bringing people together, strengthening understanding, and building lasting connections across the city and the wider area.

Many thanks to Cllr Salem for his time, warm welcome, and valuable insights.

Organised by Dialogue Society Manchester, Community picnic welcomed people from diverse backgrounds to enjoy a peaceful afternoon at Debdale Park.

Our volunteers and guests brought along delicious homemade dishes from their own cultures, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy and experience a wide variety of cuisines. Sharing food around the table created a warm atmosphere where we could get to know one another, exchange ideas, and build new friendships. After lunch, we enjoyed a relaxing walk by the lake, shared cups of tea, took part in fun games and competitions, and finished the day with a lively game of volleyball.

Events like this go beyond a single afternoon, they break down cultural barriers, reduce social isolation, and foster a lasting sense of belonging across our local neighbourhoods.

As Dialogue Society Manchester, we were delighted to participate in the "Around the World in a Day" event at NHS Fairfield General Hospital.

The day reflected the theme "Unity in Diversity," celebrating different cultures across the NHS.

Dialogue Society brought the expressive practice of Marbling Art to participants. Every drop of paint on the water’s surface symbolized the uniqueness of each individual, highlighting art's powerful role in bringing people together.

Our volunteer, Dr. Hakan Sakar, brought fantastic energy to the room with his guitar performance, getting everyone singing and keeping the rhythm together.

By offering staff and visitors a meaningful creative outlet, this event helped break down cultural barriers, support health care workers' well-being and foster a deeper sense of unity and mutual respect across the hospital community.

A sincere thank you to Fairfield General Hospital for hosting such an inspiring day. Together, we continue to bridge communities through art, music, and meaningful connection!
