Since 2013 NOMAN has been challenging participants to races that requiere as much mental grit as physical strength. All for one cause: to end 5% of cancers.

HPV is the causal agent of 5% of cancer
NOMAN challenges participants to extreme endurance events to raise awareness and funds for programmes to end the suffering caused by this devastating virus. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) causes 5% of cancers worldwide and 80% of people will come in contact with the virus. The majority of HPV-related cancers can be prevented simply by vaccinating boys and girls against this devastating virus. http://nomancampaign.org/

A more ambitious, ethical and equitable approach to HPV vaccination is needed at the global and national levels.

Through this call for global gender-neutral HPV vaccination, we are not only safeguarding the health of current generations, male and female, but also paving the way for a future where HPV-related cancers and diseases are relics of the past.

No other vaccine is routinely offered to just one s*x. Routine universal (gender-neutral) HPV vaccination programmes simplify public health messaging, are more resilient and less stigmatising than female-only programmes, as well as being more ethical and equitable.

How can the global health community move from cervical cancer elimination to the elimination of all HPV-related disease?

Last week, on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly, NOMAN is an Island: Race to End HPV and Global Action on Men’s Health convened an invitation-only breakfast dialogue in Geneva: “From Cervical Cancer Elimination to HPV Elimination: Shaping the global strategy for HPV vaccination beyond 2030”.

The roundtable brought together senior public health leaders, policymakers, researchers, practitioners and advocates to examine how routine universal HPV vaccination can be embedded as a core pillar of the next global prevention strategy.

Discussion focused on recent global and regional policy developments, the latest scientific and strategic advances in HPV prevention, and the equity-based case for vaccinating both boys and girls. Participants also explored how emerging evidence, social research and policy momentum can support a shift beyond a cervical cancer-only approach towards the elimination of all HPV-related disease.

Cervical cancer elimination remains essential. But the post-2030 HPV prevention agenda must move towards a broader goal: the prevention of all HPV-related cancers and diseases, with boys included as part of a universal vaccination strategy.
