Education can open doors to a life full of opportunity, but too many women and girls still face barriers to accessing it.

That’s why our locally-led partners support women and girls living in rural areas to access education, develop literacy skills, and build the confidence and knowledge to pursue their ambitions.

Literacy is more than an ability to read and write. It can be a foundation for earning an income, starting a business, and having greater control over your future. ✨

Maritha learned to weave palm leaf baskets through the Buniswa Women’s Co-operative in Binga, Zimbabwe. 🧺

She now sells the baskets she makes, earning an income to pay her children’s school fees, buy goats and contribute towards building her family’s home.

With support from SHE’s local partner, the Zubo Trust, this project is helping women develop skills they can turn into an income and greater financial stability. 💜

For Maritha, basket weaving has opened many doors, and given her a vital sense of independence and pride in being able to provide for her family.

Equal pay is a right, but women across Africa are still paid far less than men.

🪙 For every $1 earned by men in Africa, women receive just $0.35.

This is about more than what women are paid. It’s also about who gets access to employment, who has opportunities to build a business, who carries unpaid care responsibilities, and whose work is valued.

That's why economic empowerment matters. 💪

Skills can open the door to opportunity. 🗝️

In 2025, 80 women in Liberia were trained in tailoring through our partner, Camp for Peace. Each woman also received a start-up kit, giving her the tools to put her new skills into practice and begin earning an income. 💜

By creating pathways for women to learn, earn and build sustainable livelihoods, they can take greater control of their futures, and create lasting impact for their families and communities. 💥
