Remembering Swing Ting 🪩

Starting as a club night in Manchester, the project evolved into a record label, radio show and a whole musical community.

Active between 2008 and 2022, this community brought together sounds from across the worlds of dancehall, grime, R&B, bass, rap and soundsystem culture.

Germfree and punk 🧷

Check out these gems from our archive: an original X-Ray Spex tee from our archive - the pride and joy of Steve Bradbury, who’s pictured wearing it here - plus a pair of punk bo***ge trousers donated by Daudan!

These and many more iconic objects will be on display as part of 'God Save the Queens', our upcoming exhibition celebrating the stories and the legacy of women and non-binary folks in punk.

Important announcement ⚠️

This is the last week to catch our exhibition 'Subculture Street Party' in our main gallery space.

As we get ready to celebrate 50 years of she-punks with our next main show, 'God Save the Queens', our main gallery will remain closed for the exhibition changeover between the 11th and the 23rd of October.

Thank you to everyone who visited 'Subculture Street Party' and found parts of their own youth reflected in the stories we champion; we are so excited to show you what's next 🙌

Peace and love ✌️

With their long hair, their colourful clothes, their experiments with drugs and with music, and their pacifist ideals, the hippies were thought to represent the era when Britain finally escaped the repressed morality and post-war austerity of the 1950s.

The hippy ethos gave rise to the free music festivals movement and inspired generations of musicians, artists, and independent publishers.

Funk is in the building 🕺

Lloyd Bradley’s book Funk is it’s Own Reward traces funk from its late-‘60s roots until it hands over the baton to hip-hop with the release of ‘Rappers Delight’ in 1979. From ‘Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud’ to Off The Wall; from the Third Harlem Cultural Festival to the P-Funk Earth Tour: Funk Is Its Own Reward plots the journey of an African American cultural movement that was always about far more than simply music.

To celebrate the release, Lloyd is hosting a Funk takeover at the Museum of Youth Culture, with a Q&A, book signings, archival material and spinning vinyl with DJ Fitzroy Soul Survivor.

We’ve been blown away by the incredible submissions to our God Save the Queens open call, celebrating the women, girls and non-binary people who have shaped punk, both on stage and in the crowd.

Here’s a selection of some of our favourite submissions so far, from live shows photography and gig posters to the people, outfits and spaces that make punk what it is.
