In Collaboration with the Family of H.E. Rtd. Gen. Joseph Lagu Yanga
It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that the Office of the Ma’di Welfare Association (MAWA) in Juba, alongside the bereaved family of H.E. Rtd. Gen. Joseph Lagu Yanga and the esteemed Ma’di Leadership of the Lopirigo, announce the sudden and tragic passing of their prominent son, Professor Engineer Benedict Sebit Lagu. He passed away on September 30, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt.
A Life of Distinguished Service:
The late Prof. Eng. Benedict Sebit Lagu was a distinguished academic and a dedicated public servant. He was the biological son of the Father of the Nation and First Vice President of Southerners in republic of Sudan, Rtd. General Joseph Lagu Yanga. At the time of his passing, he served with great dedication as the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Juba.
His legacy, however, extends far beyond the academic sphere. Prof. Eng. Lagu was a pillar of his community, providing unwavering mentorship and inspiring hope. He recently served as the distinguished architect and chairman of the historic election for the Ma’di Welfare Association executives in Juba. His leadership was also instrumental in the success of the 2010 Referendum, a pivotal moment that led to the birth of our nation. His vast social and academic contributions have left an indelible mark on our community and country.
Funeral Arrangements:
The Ma’di community worldwide, the staff, alumni, and students of the University of Juba, friends, and the general public are hereby informed that the body of the late Prof. Eng. Benedict Sebit Lagu is scheduled to arrive in Juba on Friday day, October 3, 2025. The specific time of arrival will be communicated in due course.
Condolence gatherings are currently being held at his residence in Hai Commercial, Juba, and at Mukungu’s palace in Nimule.
