💡 Join us on Wednesday, 7th of April 2021, at 6 PM GMT as Dr Adam Chalmers (reader in Politics at King's) investigate the empirics of lobbying and corporate governance!
As we have stated many times, the KCLPTA is committed to investigating the interplay between political theory and empirical reality. In that spirit our previous events have served the purpose of exploring what political theory is, what it can be, and how political theorizing may be conducted in an effective and meaningful way. In our next event, we will take a look at empirical reality: specifically the empirics of lobbying and corporate governance in a national and global context. Despite receiving mostly negative connotations in public debates, political theorists like Hayek claim that the manifestation of corporate interests in politics is a natural consequence of representative systems such as those we have in Europe. Concerns raised repeatedly in this context are particularly those of transparency and accountability, and the demand for regulation aimed at providing these is growing. Together with Dr Adam Chalmers, senior lecturer in the Department of Political Economy here at Kings, we will attempt to find out why lobbying is so prominent in both national and international politics, what effective ways to regulate/monitor lobbying may look like and more. Prior reading and active participation is as always encouraged!
