What began as a simple plan to help one family rebuild their home grew into a movement of hope as SSVP Tonga rebuilt four houses through the 13 Houses Campaign.

With rising living costs and limited housing options, many 18–24-year-olds are living close to crisis. But homelessness is not inevitable. Every day, we see that it can be prevented, if we act early and take a holistic approach.

"I feel like some politicians just put us in the same category, and they don't understand that individual people need individual support. Instead there's just a general idea about homelessness

I would've liked the government to have acted more quickly while I was waiting for a home for 28 years. Because they just assume you're okay.

It would help to remove roadblocks to housing and speed up the process, simplify paperwork, and the different criteria. And for when you do finally get a home, support to learn how to keep that home would be helpful.

For example, help learning how to budget better and getting support with my learning difficulties. It was assumed that I was fine, but no one stopped to actually take note. That's why we need services that address individual needs, and to not feel like I'm being put in a box.

I would like to see the metro bus route increased, as well as more frequent services. It's difficult to socialise with people outside the city because there's only a few buses that go to different parts of the hills each day and it's expensive." - Robert.

Big news for people experiencing homelessness. 🧑

We’re grateful to the Peter Malinauskas Government and Minister Nat Cook MP who have committed an additional $2 million in untied funding to Hutt St Centre.

We are choosing to use this much needed funding boost to strengthen and extend our Aspire Program β€” helping more people move from chronic homelessness into long-term housing and stability. This money will support 71 additional people experiencing chronic homelessness over the next four years.

This funding comes at a critical time. Demand for homelessness support has increased by 42% over the past four years, driven by the housing crisis and rising cost-of-living pressures.
