This week is Mental Health Awareness Week 🌿

This year's theme is Action β€” because awareness alone isn't enough. Real change happens when we show up: for ourselves, and for each other.

Mental health touches every one of us. 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem this year. Yet stigma, silence, and lack of awareness still stop too many people from seeking the support they deserve.

This week, we're taking action.

That means having the conversations that feel difficult. Creating spaces where people feel safe to say "I'm not okay." And making sure that when someone is ready to reach out, they know exactly where to turn. πŸ’š

If you or someone you know needs support, here's where to start πŸ‘‡

This is what showing up for your community looks like.

On Saturday we joined Black Heritage Support Service at the Caribbean Health Exhibition in Brixton and it was a brilliant day.

Our team ran a drop-in clinic on the day, giving members of the community the chance to speak directly with a doctor. No waiting rooms, no barriers β€” just access.

We were also proud to have two of our members take to the stage, delivering talks on genomics and paediatrics. Seeing our community represented at events like this never gets old.

We love supporting spaces that centre culturally inclusive health and we left feeling grateful to have been part of it.

Thank you to the organisers for having us!
We'll see you at the next one. πŸ™Œ

Caribbean women have played a vital role in shaping the NHS across generations. Long before Windrush and ever since, their contribution has strengthened UK healthcare at every level - from nurses, doctors, dentists, midwives, pharmacists, public health leaders and academics.

They have cared for communities, led services, trained future professionals and advocated for equity in healthcare. Their impact has been immeasurable.

This month, we recognise their resilience, leadership and legacy β€” and celebrate their continued influence across the UK.

Representation in healthcare leadership still matters β€” and so does honouring those who paved the way.

The NHS story includes Caribbean women.

And it always has.

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Ovarian cancer affects around 7,500 women in the UK every year, and sadly causes about 4,100 deaths annually β€” more than any other gynaecological cancer.

Early diagnosis makes a huge difference β€” if identified at the earliest stages, survival chances are much higher.

Women from Caribbean backgrounds in England have been found to be more likely to receive a late-stage cancer diagnosis, including for ovarian cancer, compared with White British women. This makes awareness and early action even more important.

πŸ“Œ Common ovarian cancer symptoms to talk to your GP about if they persist:

β€’ Persistent bloating

β€’ Pelvic or tummy pain

β€’ Feeling full quickly

β€’ Needing to urinate more often

If symptoms are new, persistent, or unusual for you, trust your instincts and speak to a GP β€” early help matters.

Tooth decay is now one of the MOST COMMON childhood health conditions in the UK and is a leading cause of hospital admissions for children aged 5–9 due to severe infections.

The good news? It is preventable.

How to ensure your children have healthy teeth:

βœ” Be a good example. Brush together as a family
βœ”Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
βœ” Supervise brushing until at least age 7
βœ” Limit sugary snacks, soft drinks and juices
βœ” Visit the dentist regularly (free for under 18)

Healthy baby teeth support healthy adult teeth.

🦷❀️ Did you know gum disease affects more than your smile?

Up to 50% of adults worldwide have some form of gum disease β€” and research shows it’s linked to higher risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure.

Inflammation doesn’t stay in the mouth.

Healthy gums support a healthier heart.
