Lewisham Council has finally started a consultation on the Lee Green LTN, which closes on 8th August 2021. Weʼre raising £3,500 to help raise awareness of the problems caused by the LTN and to encourage as many people as possible to respond to the consultation. Please donate if you can, or share the link with anyone affected over the last year if you can’t. Thank you to all our supporters! 🥰

Good news! Lewisham Council have abandoned their plans for ! Following feedback from residents, they have acknowledge that people do not want an "area wide" solution which undid some of the LTN changes last November at peak hours, and would prefer the streets outside the actual schools to be closed at pick up and drop off - ie real 'school streets.

Thank you to everyone who engaged with the consultation in March.

We hope this is a positive sign that they are now listening to a broader range of local views, and we hope we can work with them on delivering the goals of improving road safety and reducing pollution in a positive way.

Lewisham have also said in their update below that the Lee Green LTN will be reviewed soon and have promised a full area wide public consultation, but the timing is yet to be decided.

The consultation for closes today. Please complete the survey and demand real school streets for the schools in Lee Green, not a partial reversal of the “LTN” changes in November, which is what is on the table.

This proposal makes the streets for Trinity Primary & Brindishe Manor schools worse than pre-LTN by creating a single open circuit route.

If they can’t afford more cameras, ask them to end the disastrous LTN trial and move the cameras to the roads which actually have schools on them. Now schools are back it’s clear we still have a huge problem with traffic displacement.

An example one of a possibly unintended consequences of LTN road closures has been the displacement of traffic onto main roads. London doesn’t have urban motorways. Instead, main roads, including the arterials controlled by Transport for London, are also residential roads, which were already dealing with traffic levels well beyond their capacities before Covid and LTNs.

Moreover, given the nature of the London property market, the 800,000 Londoners who live on the main residential roads tend to be poorer and more likely to be social and private housing tenants. As several commentators have remarked, we are seeing class war as much as car wars.

We have seen some strange alliances in London politics over the years. But the one that combines Boris Johnson and his transport adviser Andrew Gilligan and some of the more progressive Labour councils in London may be among the strangest. All are passionate cheerleaders for Low Traffic Neighbourhoo...
