In Part 3 of our National Surrogacy Week series, we’re sharing part of Georgia and Duncan’s story as intended parents.

After a complex IVF journey and heartbreak along the way, a journey through surrogacy in Mexico City is what ultimately gave them their chance at having a family, all with the help of their amazing surrogate, Aurora 🤰🏽

It was a journey that reframed their view of the world - one rooted in love, friendship and compassion. Thanks to this path, they were able to welcome their beautiful son, Sunny, into the world.

Over the following days, during National Surrogacy Awareness Week (1-7 August), we will be celebrating surrogacy and taking you behind the scenes of this unique path to building a family.

Firstly, we are hearing from Jess, MSJ’s wonderful Senior Experience Manager, on her personal story through the diagnosis of unexplained infertility and how this set her and her husband on the road to growing their family with the help of their incredible surrogate, Rhiannon.

Now it’s our time to shine 💫

Surrogacy absolutely is an option for intended parents in the UK and is built on an altruistic rather than a commercial model, as in other countries.

While My Surrogacy Journey and many others in the surrogacy space are pushing for surrogacy reform here in the UK, surrogacy as a path to parenthood is perfectly legal and has been a viable route to building a family since the 1980s 👪

A crucial element of UK surrogacy reform is due to be debated in parliament 🗣️

Under current UK legislation, intended parents are forced to go through a lengthy, stressful court process to obtain a Parental Order before they are legally recognised as their child’s parents. Until this point, the surrogate and their spouse are considered the legal parents, regardless of whether they have no genetic link to the child they have carried.

These legal frameworks create unnecessary anxiety for both the intended parents and the amazing surrogates who help bring these children into the world. This is why we are thrilled to hear that this topic will be put forward for debate on 7th September in response to a petition pushed forward by parents through surrogacy, Adam Frisby and Jamie Corbett 👏

Recognising intended parents from birth is a crucial step toward true family equality and modernising a legal system that is deeply outdated. We proudly stand behind this petition and will be closely following the parliamentary debate 🤍
