The Met Office has just upgraded the Storm Austen weather warning for tomorrow to include the North Wales coast. We now have a yellow warning for wind all day on Friday, with an expectation of gusts up to 55mph.

Please take sensible precautions, and keep an eye on the warnings as they do change.

Today is world mental health day.

It’s a day to recognise the importance of looking after our mental health, listening to people’s experiences and making sure every voice is heard. Sometimes, simply having someone who will listen, and stand alongside us can make a real difference.

Behind every National Coastwatch volunteer is a person with their own story, experiences and reasons for volunteering.

For some, Coastwatch provides a sense of purpose.

For others, it’s the friendships, the camaraderie and being part of a team.

Our volunteers spend their time looking out for people on the coast — keeping watch, raising the alarm when needed and offering reassurance to those who may need it.

“You’re loud and clear on Channel 65. Out.”

But that spirit of looking out doesn't stop when the watch ends.

Across our stations, watchkeepers look out for each other too. They share a conversation, offer support, notice when someone might need a little extra time or a listening ear, and make sure that no one feels they have to face things alone.

Because at National Coastwatch, looking out for people is what we do.

On the coast. In our stations. And within our Coastwatch Crew.

We look out for you.

We look out for each other.

Today we had the opportunity, over a shared lunch, to express our sincere thanks to a retiring member of the team, Watchkeeper Ian, and to Ian’s wife, Ruth.

Ian is the longest serving member of NCI Llandudno, and we have all benefited from his long service, experience and wisdom. Ian served as our Treasurer for several years. As a member of the Management Team, Ian has, with others, overseen the growth of our crew from the mere five it was in his early days.

Warmest wishes for a peaceful retirement, Ian, free of committee meetings, log books and incident numbers, and thank you so much for your service and for your part in making NCI Llandudno what it is today.

Some great advice here from National Coastwatch Institution if you're planning to set off from Conwy Marina or Deganwy Marina over the coming weeks.

Good morning!

Planning to take the yacht out this weekend? ⛵

Before you leave the marina or harbour, take a few minutes to make sure you and your crew are ready for the conditions ahead.

Check the forecast - Check the wind and sea state where you are and on the way to your destination

Know the tides - especially if you're entering or leaving a harbour, navigating a narrow channel, or sailing close to the coast

Check your radio - Make sure your VHF is working. Give your local National Coastwatch station a call on CH65

Lifejackets for everyone - Ensure they are correctly fitted

Check your safety equipment - flares, lights, navigational equipment, first aid kit

Tell someone your plans - where are you going and when you expect to get there

Today the NCI Llandudno team gathered for our bi-monthly meeting. It’s a great opportunity for us to catch up with each other, to share experiences of being on watch, and to reflect on our work as a whole crew.

We had an important presentation from, and discussion with, the local Intelligence Officers from Border Force, whose work on the North Wales coast is focused predominantly on the illegal movement of dangerous narcotics. Border Force is one of NCI’s several partner organisations, both nationally and locally, and we appreciated their input.

We also got to celebrate some newly qualified Watchkeepers!

Here you see our Station Manager Meurig Williams awarding epaulets to Watchkeepers Elaine, Robin and Ron! Our huge congratulations and thanks to them for all their hard work. Becoming a Qualified Watchkeeper is no mean feat! A very warm welcome to the team to each and every one of you!

Several of our Watchkeepers and trainees undertook VHF Marine Radio training recently, and all of them passed their final assessment. Today Meurig was able to present certificates to Derek, Ron and Tony. Our congratulations to them and to everyone who has passed that assessment.
