COMMUNITY champions from across Almond Valley were recognised at the Scottish Parliament on Thursday, following a strong response to nominations for a Local Hero to attend the Opening of the Scottish Parliament.
Members of the public were invited to nominate a Local Hero from Almond Valley, with one person to be selected to join Almond Valley MSP Angela Constance at the Opening of Parliament.
With so many deserving people put forward, Angela Constance MSP for Almond Valley invited the nominees to the Scottish Parliament to recognise and thank them for the contribution they make to communities across Almond Valley.
Lorraine Gillies was selected as Almond Valley’s Local Hero and joined Angela Constance MSP at the Opening of the Scottish Parliament. The nominees were recognised for the many ways in which they support others and strengthen their communities, including through volunteering, community work and acts of kindness.
Angela Constance MSP said: "Our communities are made stronger by people who give their time, energy and compassion to support others, often without expecting anything in return. We received so many fantastic nominations when we asked people to put forward a Local Hero to join me at the Opening of the Scottish Parliament. While only one person could be selected for that role, I felt it was important that everyone who was nominated received recognition for the difference they make.
"It was a real privilege to welcome the nominees to the Scottish Parliament and hear more about the contribution they make to communities across Almond Valley.
"I was delighted that Lorraine Gillies was selected as our Local Hero and was able to join me for the Opening of Parliament. Every person nominated should be incredibly proud. They represent the very best of Almond Valley, and I hope they know how much their efforts are valued and appreciated."

A wee word from Speak Their Name, the quilts including Lothians Speak Their Name Quilt are still at Glasgow Central Station today.
We are honoured to be the guardians of the Lothian quilt, all of us who have made a square to represent our lost loved ones have given our hearts to keep their memories alive, make sure they are never forgotten and show them as people not statistics.
We are in early planning stages for a 2nd panel and we are hopeful that other areas in Scotland will join us with their quilts.

Hi everyone,
I know you get inundated with people asking for your support and I try to keep my ask to once a year.
We are fast approaching the kiltwalk again and myself and Danny are doing it in Neil’s memory for Neil's Hugs Foundation.
Every single penny will make a difference to us being able to continue to support people with mental ill health and those who have lost someone to su***de.
My granddaughter maybe joining us this year but as a teenager an early Sunday morning start might not happen.

The Speak Their Name Memorial Quilts Summer 2026 Tour is well underway, and we couldn't be more grateful for the incredible response we've received so far.

It has been a privilege to meet so many wonderful people and communities along the way. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to visit the exhibition, share your stories, remember loved ones, and support one another. Your kindness, openness, and compassion have made every stop on the tour truly special.

Created by people bereaved by su***de, each quilt square honours an individual life through fabric, embroidery, photographs, and treasured personal mementoes. Together, the quilts continue to provide a powerful space for remembrance, reflection, and hope, while helping to raise awareness of the impact of su***de on families, friends, and communities.

As the tour continues across the UK this summer, we look forward to meeting many more of you. Thank you for walking alongside us and helping to ensure every life is remembered, every story is honoured, and no one feels alone.
