🌿 A Beautiful Day at the Allotment 🍓
Today was one of those days that reminds us why community matters. ☀️💚

Our learners spent the day discovering traditional skills that have been passed down through generations. Together we made:

🍓 Homemade Strawberry Jam using our own homegrown strawberries 🌼 Comfrey Ointment 🌱 Plantain Balm

There's something incredibly rewarding about learning how nature can provide so much—from delicious food to natural remedies. More than that, it's about slowing down, sharing stories, learning from one another and enjoying time outdoors.

Days like today are about so much more than what we made. They build confidence, encourage wellbeing, create friendships and reconnect us with nature and the simple pleasures of life.

Here's our simple strawberry jam recipe for anyone who'd like to give it a go:
🍓 2lb homegrown strawberries 🍬 2lb granulated sugar 🍋 Juice of 1 lemon
A perfect recipe for bottling a little taste of summer. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made today so special. We can't wait for the next workshop!

June and July are the months of abundance, and our allotment is certainly showing it! 🌱☀️

The growing space is bursting with life, colour, and produce, creating the perfect outdoor environment for learning, connection, and wellbeing. It's wonderful to see both the allotment and our course participants flourishing together as the season unfolds.

We're excited to share a few recent photos of the progress and all that's growing here. 💚

What a fantastic day yesterday! The brilliant Wendy Rotheram demonstrated how to create your own hanging basket and afterwards lead a guided meditation session. Beautiful sunny day, with great people. Thank you to Wendy, Paul Rotheram Snr and all our boss volunteers who made the day possible ❤️🤗

It’s World Bee Day 🐝🌼

Bees might be small, but they play a huge part in helping plants, flowers and food grow. Without them, our gardens and allotments wouldn’t thrive in the same way.

At Brighter Futures, we see how important nature is every day through our growing sessions and time outdoors. Creating green spaces helps support wildlife like bees, while also giving people the chance to learn new skills and enjoy being outside 🌱

A small reminder that looking after nature helps look after us too 💛

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week 💛

Spending time outdoors and being active in nature can have a really positive impact on how we feel.

🌱 Time outdoors can help reduce stress
😊 Nature can improve mood and wellbeing
🧠 Being active can help focus and clarity

Being outside, learning new skills and taking part in activities can help people feel calmer, more focused and more positive overall 🌿

That’s something we see all the time through our sessions at Brighter Futures.

It's Stress Awareness Month... and it's good to remember, sometimes it’s the simple things that help the most 🌿

Spending time outdoors, connecting with others and taking a moment to slow down can all help reduce stress and improve how we feel.

At Brighter Futures, we see the impact of this every day through our sessions and community activities 💛

Grounding with trees can feel powerful because it combines nervous system regulation, sensory focus, and symbolic connection to nature.
Why grounding with trees works 🌲🌳

1. It calms the nervous system
Being near trees and green spaces has been linked to lower stress hormones, slower heart rate, and reduced anxiety. Natural environments signal “safety” to the brain more than busy urban settings.

2. Trees provide stability cues
A tree is rooted, steady, and unmoving. Your brain often responds to imagery and symbolism, so leaning on or standing near a tree can help you feel steadier and more anchored.

3. Sensory grounding brings you into the present
Touching bark, noticing leaves moving, smelling the air, hearing birds or wind—all of this shifts attention away from racing thoughts and back into the body and present moment.

4. Rhythms in nature regulate us
Wind, birdsong, branches swaying, natural light patterns—these gentle rhythms can help the body move out of stress mode.

🌱 It all starts somewhere…

From cauliflower and cabbage to tomatoes and corn, these are some of the seeds we’ve been planting as part of our growing course 🌿

It might look small now, but with a bit of time, care and patience, these will soon turn into something amazing 💛

A great reminder that growth takes time, in the garden and in ourselves 🌱
