Street Angels headed to France!

Earlier this month, project lead Gary Wootten head to the European Social Marketing Conference in Montpellier, France. Whilst there, he held a 20 minute workshop telling people all about the work of our project, Street Angels, in both Chester and Birkenhead!

We had a great workshop on Sunday afternoon in the sun! 🌞

Lots of tips and inspiration was shared, plus plenty of yummy treats in the form of both vegetables and cake!

Getting together regularly gives us a chance to exchange knowledge and produce, and to socialise together - it's a great check in to see how we are all doing.

Thank you for all your support so far with our Spacehive campaign, it means the world. Every backer is one more person showing us how important Street Angels is in Chester and how much we are appreciated.

We are 39% of the way to our total, with just 21 more days to go! Please keep sharing with friends, colleagues, family, the person next to you on the bus - every pound goes a long way!

We would like to offer a more consistent service on Friday and Saturday nights, create a more varied and relevant training programme for our volunteers and develop our website for better signposting.

Did you know these top tips for looking after your garden in a heatwave?

If you are part of our Made On My Patch programme you can get these tips and more from our helpful gardener!

☀️ Keep your garden thriving in a heatwave with these 5 quick tips:

💧 Water deep & early: Soak the soil at the roots around sunrise to prevent evaporation.
🍂 Mulch up: Add a 5–10 cm layer of bark or compost to lock in moisture and cool roots.
🏺 Protect pots: Move containers into the shade and put saucers underneath to hold water.🚫 Pause pruning & feeding: Don't stress your plants; avoid trimming or fertilizing right now.
🌾 Mow high: Raise your lawnmower blades to keep grass longer so it can shade its own roots.

Our team will be out on Saturday night led by Alison. Not as warm as last weekend, but the team will be armed with lollipops, water and flip flops and ready to help you in any way possible!

Summer is now in full swing and the vegetables on our patches are growing at an increasing speed! 🥕

In July you could harvest 🫛 :
- Beetroot
- Carrots
- Courgettes
- Garlic
- Tomatoes
- Onions
- Peas
- Salad Leaves
- Soft Fruit
- Spinach

But don't forget there's still time to sow! Some suggestions would be 🥬 :
- Chicory
- Spring Cabbages
- French Beans
- Turnips

It's a double weekend for our Birkenhead Street Angels this weekend! Catherine's leading on Friday night, and Gary is heading up on Saturday night! Make sure you say Hi, and with this warmer weather please remember to keep hydrated!

We had another social last weekend at one of our patches for our Made On My Patch programme! Our gardener, Simon, did a demo on leek planting, we swapped some seeds and enjoyed a coffee and biscuits together.
