🍂 Autumn Clean-Up & Crop Protection: Get Your Veg Patch Winter-Ready! 🥦
As the temperatures drop, it’s time to shift focus from harvesting to protecting your crops and prepping your soil for early next spring. A little effort now saves dynamic growth time come April!
Here are 3 quick actions to take in the garden this week:
🍅 1. Ripen Late Green Tomatoes
Don't let early frosts ruin your remaining tomatoes! Cut down outdoor vines, strip the leaves, and hang them upside down indoors or in a greenhouse. You can also pop green tomatoes in a drawer or paper bag with a banana—they will ripen them in no time.
🐦 2. Net Your Winter Brassicas & Strip Leaves
Hungry pigeons are on the scout as natural food sources thin out. Secure heavy-duty netting over cabbages, kale, and Brussels sprouts. While you’re at it, strip off any yellowing leaves near the base of the plants to stop grey mould from creeping in.
🪴 3. Elevate Pots & Drain Saucers
Waterlogged, freezing soil is the fast track to root rot. Lift container crops onto pot feet or bricks to keep drainage holes clear, and remember to remove all water saucers so roots don't sit in icy puddles over winter.
