Organisations that have benefitted from Liverpool Heartbeat's support include Liverpool Swimming Club, Tri-4-Life, Merseyside Youth Development Service, Ro

tary International and Life Survival to name but a few. Some of Liverpool Heartbeat’s most notable achievements are the successful annual Cross Mersey Swim, support of dance and performance organisations, sponsorship of football teams, the Natural High School Tour, which engaged over 30,000 young people, Tri-4-Life European Challenge, New Start housing programme and the free provision of a mini-bus for charitable and educational organisations. Liverpool Heartbeat has recently become a driving force behind an Olympic programme, entitled the John Hulley Olympic Festival, which aims to engage young people under the Olympic ethos. These events include europes largest community tri-athlon, equestrian, swimming and 13 other sporting events. Liverpool Heartbeat has developed a social and emotional development programme for young people, entitled Operation: Pathfinder, which engages the most hard to reach young people in society.

This 14th June, we come together for something truly special — The John Hulley Day, a moment that marks the beginning of an annual tradition honouring one of Liverpool’s great pioneers of sport and community.

Registration opens at 9.30am, with the event beginning at 10.30am — but the story behind this date stretches far deeper.

It was on 14th June 1862 that John Hulley held the first of his six Olympic Festivals, planting seeds that would help shape modern sport.

On 14th June 2009, his grave was lovingly restored with support from the Olympic Committee.

And on 14th June 2019, H.R.H. Princess Anne unveiled the John Hulley Statue — a tribute to a Liverpool man born in Kensington in 1832, whose vision still inspires us today.

This year, we begin a new chapter. A yearly gathering to celebrate movement, courage, community — and the legacy of a man who believed ordinary people could achieve extraordinary things.

I’d love to see you on the day cheering these amazing athletes on.

Countdown to John Hulley Day

Only three weeks to go until John Hulley Day — a celebration of Liverpool’s sporting spirit and community pride.
It’s a day where people from across the region come together to move, support, and honour John Hulley — the man who believed sport could unite us all.

All three groups — the cyclists, runners and swimmers — will start and finish at the John Hulley Statue.

This year’s routes bring Liverpool’s waterfront to life:

- Runners will head all the way to the Liver Building, tracing the city’s heartbeat along the promenade.

- Cyclists will ride the length of the Prom to the Red Bull, a route full of energy and camaraderie.

- Swimmers will take on a one‑mile challenge in Queens Dock, a true test of endurance and spirit.

Throughout the morning, Zope Media Film Productions will be capturing every stride, splash and smile — preserving the day’s energy for everyone to share.

If you’re free, come down from 9:30am and find a spot along the waterfront.
Your cheers and encouragement will make the day shine even brighter.

A deeply personal message from me, Robin

I don’t often ask for personal support, but this one sits very close to my heart.

Many of you know why Liverpool Heartbeat began — to give young people the chance to live healthy, confident, fulfilling lives. That mission has always been personal to me. And today, it’s even more so.

My great‑granddaughter, little Matilda — our Tilly — is three years old. She’s bright, funny, full of spirit… but she has a condition that means she can’t yet speak, only make sounds. Recently she’s been working with Speech and Language, and the support they’ve given her — and her mum, dad, and all of us as a family — has been nothing short of remarkable. They’re helping her find her voice, step by step.

If you’re able to spare anything at all, even the smallest donation, it would mean the world. Not just to Tilly, but to every family who relies on this kind of care.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for always standing with us — with me — in lifting up young lives.

Thank you

I wanted to share a few words about John Hulley Day — the beginning of what we hope will grow into an annual celebration of Liverpool’s sporting spirit. It’s a day where ordinary people from across the region come together to move, to try, to support one another, and to honour the legacy of a man who believed deeply in the power of community and physical wellbeing.

On the morning of the event, all three groups — the cyclists, the runners and the swimmers — will start and finish at the John Hulley Statue. It’s a lovely focal point, full of history and heart, and it feels fitting that everything begins and ends there.

The runners will be heading all the way to the new Cruise Terminal this year, which adds a beautiful stretch of scenery to their route. And throughout the morning, Zope Media Film Productions will be capturing the day for posterity — the effort, the smiles, the nerves, the pride… all of it.

I’ll be there, and I’d truly love to see people lining the route, offering a clap, a wave or a few kind words. It makes such a difference to those taking part — more than most of them will ever say out loud.

If you’re free, come down from 9:30am and find a spot near the statue or anywhere along the paths. Your presence alone will lift the whole day.

I’m so proud of my friend Alex Rigby, and I’d love everyone in the Liverpool Heartbeat family to get behind him for something truly special.

After two incredible years, Running the Railways is back for its third challenge — sponsored by Clan Contracting and delivered with Merseyrail. And this time, Alex and an amazing team of runners are taking on something huge to support Centre 56.

From 5pm on Friday 26th June, they’ll be running 5k every hour, on the hour, for 24 hours — covering the route between Freshfields and Formby stations. That’s 120km in total, almost three marathons back‑to‑back, all to raise £24,000 for children and families who’ve experienced domestic abuse.

I’ve seen how much heart Alex puts into this. The whole team is running to help keep children safe — something Centre 56 has been doing for over 50 years. Their work gives little ones a place to feel secure again, to play, learn, and rebuild confidence after trauma. It’s care that changes lives.

If you can support them, it would mean the world.

Every donation — big or small — helps a child feel safe enough to grow again. - Donation link is in the comments below.

And if donating isn’t possible, there are still so many ways to get involved, from volunteering to fundraising. Just reach out to Alex at [email protected].

Let’s show Alex and the team the full strength of Liverpool — heart first, always.
