“Everyone say raw milk”
In May, we read Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, and the conversation did not disappoint! We discussed the protagonist of the book, Natalie. Was she a villain, a victim or both? Is she truly a tradwife, and does she ever show true remorse? We had a long chat about the ethics of personal autonomy vs social responsibility. Can any of us truly live the way we want, or do we have an obligation to others? While Natalie was at the forefront of our minds, we also discussed Doug, the Trumpian character dedicated to becoming President, damn the cost (and consequences). And let’s not forget Caleb, for some, the true villain of the story - a weak and passive man who was complicit in creating a dangerous world for his children but was not held to the same standard as his wife or mother. As Hollie said, “It didn’t matter what decisions the women made; the men suffered zero consequences, only the women.”

This was a fast-paced, energetic, and fascinating book club, with a lot more to be said! Overall, it scored 4/5 (a very high score from us)

Reading Folk 🧡
We had a wonderful 5 weeks reading and discussing Tanya Sweeney's controversial debut novel, Esther Is Now Following You.

Our next club starts on Wednesday 3 June in Toxteth Library and Friday 5 June in Home-Start Knowsley and we’re reading the classic, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg.

Walton Book Social 🧡
A really interesting night discussing The Bass Rock by Evie Wyld, a complicated story set across three time frames with male violence overshadowing the lives of all the characters, like the Bass Rock itself that looms over the town.

The narrative style divided opinion, some loved it, some were frustrated the story wasn’t linear. Regardless our conversation was full of passion, rage and a little humour. Overall it scored 3.5/5 and a few of us will be re-reading!

We had another great night at Walton Vale Community Shop for the Walton Book Social discussing The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion 🦞

It received mixed reviews but we had a great conversation around the books themes of love, commitment, neurodiversity, logic and emotion.

Our next meet-up takes place on Thursday 21 May from 6-7:30pm, and we’ll be discussing The Bass Rock by Evie Wyld
