Merseyside NT Volunteers

Merseyside NT Volunteers We are a group of volunteers who like getting involved with practical conservation work Tools are provided. We take our own packed lunch & drinks.

The work days and weekends are fun and friendly social occasions giving you the chance to get to know NT properties. There's also a walking programme on alternate Saturdays, not too demanding! So, no experience is necessary since training is always provided on-site. Please wear your own suitable working clothes: waterproofs, work gloves, wellingtons and/or boots. We're often chosen by DofE student

s to help then achieve their awards. No matter if you're young (over 16, unless accompanied by an adult), working, retired, everyone is welcome, and you don't need to be a NT member to volunteer.

If you have received a copy of the latest National Trust Magazine you may have spotted a few familiar faces. We feature in the article "In Good Company" alongside the Barnet National Trust Association.

Unlike Supporter groups who may carry out fundraising activities, we donate our time, working alongside rangers carrying out environmental work. Last year our small group carried out 1222.5 hours across Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales, including 2 working weekends at Calke Abbey and Hendre Isaf.

We were back at NT Speke Hall on Sunday. We spent the day clearing an area which has been used as a tanalised wood "graveyard". This included broken benches and posts amongst other things. This cannot be left to rot down due to preservatives in the wood and has to be removed for specialist disposal. We managed to fill the large skip ready for removal. We also sorted plastic, stones, firewood and decorative edging stones which will be reused where possible. The intention is to bring the area back into use so our efforts will hopefully help this happen.

9 of us at National Trust Formby on Sunday, plus 7 from Manchester National Trust Volunteers.

We spent the day staking tree guards around saplings by the new Victoria Road car park. This will help the saplings to become established by protecting them from the wind.

Other tasks were positioning and digging in a bench and new signage by the Victoria Road entrance.

Another lovely, sunny day outdoors made even better by the supply of cake provided by the Manchester group.

The workdays are coming thick and fast at the moment. 4 of our group were back in Wales at Erddig NT/YG on Sunday.

They were removing tree guards and clearing vegetation from around the base of maturing saplings. The weather was kind to them this week. Another successful day.

We hopped over the border again for our working weekend in Eryri (Snowdonia). We were staying at the Hendre Isaf Bunkhouse and working alongside Ranger Lewis on the TWIG project at Ysbyty Ifan. The project will open-up previously inaccessible woodlands for people to enjoy on the Ysbyty estate whilst also improving biodiversity. More info on the project can be found on the link below.

On Saturday we were planting trees on one area of the project. The day started off in brilliant sunshine but quickly changed to a hailstorm and a chilly 4°C. We persevered until lunchtime but then retreated to the workshops where we finished applying linseed oil to 19 bird boxes, 5 bat boxes, a bench and table. These will be going into the woodland area along the newly created trail.

Sunday found us on another site which has been cleared of 60 year old conifers to complete the tree planting and improve the woodland diversity. Over both days, between the 8 of us, we planted 850 native saplings including oak, hawthorn and wild cherry. We also opened up an area alongside the river by removing some conifers. The day was finished off by forming a human chain to move large timber planks from the top of a hill down towards the bottom. It wasn't possible to use machinery. It was a long way, there were a lot of planks and they were heavy!. This will be used to create a boardwalk over the marshy areas of the new walking trail. To make up for lost time on Saturday due to inclement weather we stayed longer than usual on Sunday to try to finish as much of the tasks as possible.

We managed to fit in a couple of quizzes, some excellent food and a tipple or two. A great weekend had by all. We are the last group to use the Hendre Isaf Bunkhouse which has served lots of volunteer groups well over the years. We will be back next year at different accommodation.

On Sunday we popped over the border into North Wales with Manchester National Trust Volunteers.
A few people worked on feeding a chipping machine whilst the rest of us began moving piles of cut rhododendrons from a muddy area to a location where the chipping machine could safely be moved without getting bogged down.
In the afternoon we removed temporary tree guards from meadowland in front of the castle. We were treated to the sight of a hare racing across the field.
Another beautiful day in lovely surroundings.

5 go to Bickerton....
We spent the day removing birch saplings. If left unchecked they will cover the heathland area which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its plants and wildlife. As some saplings had previously been treated they were easier to remove but others were a bit more stubborn. This was one of the final opportunities to do this task before bird nesting season gets underway. Between us we managed to clear quite a large area allowing more light onto the heather.

We started off with our AGM at National Trust Formby on Sunday. Ranger Chris presented 2 of our volunteers with certificates in recognition of 15 years environmental volunteering with the National Trust.

We then continued working on the dune restoration project, creating sand trapping fences using brushwood. These are designed to reduce wind speeds, causing sand to deposit on either side. These are essential for restoring coastal dunes, allowing marram grass to establish to stabalise the dunes further.

We also had a look at the new car park which was constructed using the rubble removed from the beach. The new bench was made by volunteers using felled timber from the area.

Our group were working on Thurstaston Common on Sunday. They were cutting saplings and coppicing willow to clear scrub to increase the available nesting habitat e.g. for Willow Warblers. Cut material was woven into existing barrier hedging along the path to Royden Park.

Another productive day at Formby, cutting and burning blackthorn along eastern edge of dune regeneration project.
