This week’s Mental Health Awareness Volunteer Training at Wirral Mind was a great example of how learning can build confidence and help volunteers respond well to the people and communities around them.

As Wirral develops a new Volunteering Strategy, we need to think about the support volunteers and Volunteer Managers need - from accessible training and peer learning to recognition, wellbeing and progression.

It's inspiring to hear stories like Mike's from all across Wirral's voluntary sector. Now a Volunteer Adviser with Citizens Advice Wirral, he uses his skills and life experience from his working life to support local people and mentor new volunteers.

His story is a reminder that retirement can open the door to new purpose, friendships and opportunities to keep learning.

Retirement is just the beginning!

Meet Mike, one of our brilliant Volunteer Advisers at Citizens Advice Wirral.

After an incredible 53-year career as an electrical engineer, Mike was looking for something completely different when he retired — something to keep his brain working and give him a new sense of purpose.

Three years later, Mike is an experienced adviser who also helps mentor new volunteers.

💬 “I enjoy volunteering at Citizens Advice Wirral because every day is different. Seeing students increase their confidence as they progress with their training is really rewarding.”

His advice to anyone thinking about volunteering is simple:

👉 “Try it, as it is very rewarding.”

Your career may have finished, but your skills, knowledge and life experience can continue to make a difference to people in your local community. 🙋

🔍 FUNDING FOCUS: Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund

Charities and other benevolent organisations working across Merseyside can apply for grants of up to £5,000 to support projects benefiting local communities. Applications are welcomed from a broad range of organisations and causes. Not-for-profit CICs may also be considered.

📢 Help shape the future of volunteering in Wirral!

Over the last few months, Wirral CVS has been speaking to volunteers, Volunteer Managers, community organisations and partners to better understand the opportunities and challenges facing volunteering across the borough.

The insights gathered so far will help shape a new Wirral Volunteering Strategy, but before we move into the next stage of development, we want to check that we have heard the right things and identify the issues that matter most.
