🚴 Chair of the Council Takes on Charity Bike Ride Across South Derbyshire
The Chair of South Derbyshire District Council is preparing to take on an inspiring 56-mile charity bike ride through all 15 wards of the district in support of his chosen charity, Miles for Smiles.
The challenge will see the Chair travel across South Derbyshire, highlighting the communities that make the district such a special place to live, work and visit, while raising vital funds for a worthy local cause.
Miles for Smiles provides valuable support to local children and families, and the fundraiser aims to make a meaningful difference through donations raised along the route.
As well as supporting the charity, the ride has been organised with the aim of bringing communities across South Derbyshire together, celebrating the district's strong sense of community and shared commitment to helping others.
Residents, businesses and organisations can support the initiative by making a donation and helping to spread awareness of the fundraising effort.
Further information about the challenge and how to support Miles for Smiles will be shared through South Derbyshire District Council's official communication channels in due course.
Together, we can support a fantastic local charity and demonstrate the community spirit that makes South Derbyshire such a wonderful place.

Three Sculptures have been erected in Linton as part of the Linton Greenways - Pathways through nature and Time project. Rickmans Corner have been working with People Express from Swadlincote on the project and have been supported by Linton Parish Council.
The sculptures can be seen at Rickmans Corner Community Centre, The Village Orchard (Colliery Lane) and Foxley Wood (just off the Linton Heath Car park). The stone waymarker sculptures are are of Flax Flowers and have been created by artist and sculptor Graeme Mitcheson using Cadeby Limestone, Blue Ancaster Limestone and St Bees Red Sandstone respectively.

The Linton name comes from the Old English meaning 'Flax settlement'. 'Lin' is the old word for Flax which is used to produce Linen and 'tun' is old English for settlement. The plant grows well on clay soil so is well suited to South Derbyshire.

The project has already seen Community involvement to help improve biodiversity through tree planting; visiting with Linton School to plant flax seeds and learn about Linen production; a walk linking Linton to other villages as part of the National Forest Walking festival and a 'have a go at mosaics' workshop. The team are now working on the creation of a heritage trail with interpretation boards to be sited at 8 locations throughout the village.
