Maasai Girls Education Project

Maasai Girls Education Project Our primary purpose is providing much-needed and life-transforming education for girls in the Kajiado area of Kenya.

Maasai people identified this urgent need, so the Joseph Thomson Maasai Trust works with partner Olikira le Maa to make this happen.

Is it a boat that I need, and not a bike? No matter, the wheels just keep on turning for our life-transforming project.

In just over a month’s time, 25th/26th April, our esteemed secretary Polymath Pete Wright will be embarking on an epic 24 hour cycle. Now this is indeed a truly herculean task but even more so when you realise that it is being undertaken to mark Peter’s 78th Birthday on the 24th April. Peter would like you to help him celebrate by digging deep and sponsoring him to help raise his target of £1500. This money will allow us to continue our work of providing education for Maasai girls in Kenya. You could also help in other ways e.g. maybe you could join Peter at some point and cycle alongside for moral support. There will certainly be some of us at the start and finish in Linlithgow for a proper send off and welcome home. If you are a local company and would like to become a supporter on your own social media or in store please go ahead and advertise away or contact us for any assistance required. We already have Scotmid Coop head office on board for which we are truly grateful. We are also looking for someone to advise on a tracking system for the duration of the event and perhaps loan us the necessary equipment. Any cycle clubs/shops/organisations out there that can help please get in touch? More details of the route and opportunities to donate will be forthcoming but let’s get this show on the road and get the fundraising started by scanning the QR code in the photos or clicking on the link below. Thank you 😊

Please take a moment to read this letter from Abigael, one of the Maasai girls we help in Kenya. This really does sum up why we do what we do and what it means to these girls. If you would like to help in any way, perhaps run little fundraising coffee morning or a garden party in the summer then please, please get in touch. You can also make a direct donation by scanning the QR code below which will take you to the website where you can donate. Please help us continue our quest to educate these young girls who would not normally get this opportunity. The difference this makes to the girls and their families really is Thank you

The first Joseph Thomson Maasai Trust, Board of Trustees meeting of 2025 was held at Joseph’s birthplace in Penpont, Dumfries and Galloway. This meeting was incredibly worthwhile with many subjects being discussed and planned including an extensive fundraising events programme and a very exciting UK visit by Ezekial, the Maasai elder, who is our partner in Kenya. The meeting was scheduled to coincide with Jospeh’s birthday on the 14th February and it is important to remember that everything we do here at the Maasai Girls Education Project stems from the adventures of this inspirational man and is part of his great Legacy. Joseph Thompson is held in great esteem by the Maasai people with his travels and interactions still being taught to the children to this day. Within the board of trustees there are many direct descendants of Joseph’s immediate family and these family members are directly responsible for the setting up of our wonderful organisation. Some of these family members can be seen here in the photos taken after the meeting, at Joseph’s grave. To travel into Africa and live amongst unknown peoples and animals with such basic equipment and knowledge back in the 1800’s really does take adventure to a different level than most of us can imagine. The bravery and humanity shown by this man is awe inspiring and we are incredibly proud to carry out our work in his name! Please get involved. Everyone deserves a right to education. Please help us provide that for as many as we can. It really is

There is a genuine affinity within the Board of Trustees to this man, the Maasai people, and the places he travelled. Many of the board members are direct descendants of Joseph Thomson and some have indeed “walked with the Maasai” in his memory. Others within the board have climbed the 2 highest mountains in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, which Thomson himself visited, and have trekked around the Atlas and summited North Africa’s highest Mountain, Mt Toubkal. These treks and climbs are set to continue with further trips planned to Kenya and Mt Toubkal over the next couple of years. As I’m sure you can see from this lineage and these actions, there really is a genuine connection to Joseph Thomson and the Maasai people within the board. This in turn has generated a real desire to continue his legacy and help the Maasai people in a way they themselves have chosen.

Exciting times! At long last we have a new website! The site looks terrific and will be the main hub to keep us informed of how the trust operates and to provide key information and opportunities to support us. It will also be the place to keep up to date with the girls progress throughout their educational journey, which after all, is the most important thing of all. We have a very busy schedule of fundraising events planned for the year and have received several requests to give illustrated talks to various organisations about our work. This information will all be available on the website in due course. Please bear in mind that the new site is very much a work in progress but please take a little time to have a look and we will be only too happy to receive comments and suggestions for improvements and additions.

As always if you would like to organise a fund raising event or perhaps a talk for your organisation/club, please get in touch and we will be only too happy to help.
