What is a 'true' wildflower? 🌼

By definition, wildflowers are native flowers that do not need human intervention to grow - and can self-populate an area through roots or rely on pollinators to disperse their seeds 💐

A meadow consisting of wildflowers is often a self-supporting area that benefits biodiversity through providing a food source for pollinators, shelter for insects and a habitat for wildlife 🦆

That's why we want a LOT more of them in the UK!

🤔What causes wildflowers to be different colours?🤔

🥕Carotenoids are naturally-ocurring pigments that are responsible for plant colours like red, orange and yellow!

🔷Anthocyanins are also naturally-ocurring, and colour plants red, purple or even blue in some cases!

Plants usually rely on one or both types of pigment for their colour: and the fewer the pigments a flower contains, the lighter the color will be! 🌤

A firm favourite of honeybees, the common harebell is also the county flower of Yorkshire, Antrim and Dumfriesshire 🔔

It can be found throughout the mainland UK, but is much scarcer in Northern Ireland 🙈

Wiltshire is where it can be found growing wild, in acidic or chalky soils 🍋

Wildflowers are great for the environment - no doubt about that! 🌏

They have such an important place in the world that their beauty has been celebrated across many works of literature - we'd like to share this poem from Nikita Gill called 'Hearts Like Wildflowers' ✍

The forget-me-not is the county flower of Westmorland, and can be found in that region, North-West of England.💐

It readily self-seeds and can spread from the area it originally grows in, but favours specific environments such as high elevation and limestone-rich soils.

Share this post if you've spotted one in the wild!

It's Wildflower Week!

We are kicking off celebrations with a how-to guide for making your own seed bombs! 💣

Suggested flowers to use depend on the amount of light - hedgerows, or other areas of light shade may benefit from yarrow, viper's bugloss, oxeye daisy, campion and other similar wildflower! 🌼

Heavily shaded areas like woodland will do better with agrimony, bluebell, foxgove, buttercup, teasel or clary - among others! 💐

The honeysuckle, crowned county flower of Warwickshire in a 2002 Plantlife survery, grows in hedgerows or woodland prodominantly 🌳

It relies on night-time pollinators such as moths so releases a stronger smell at night in order to attract them! 🌜

The seep monkeyflower bucks the trend of a lot of county flowers, not being a native growth! ❌

It is thought to have been introduced to cultivation in 1812 and was first recorded in the wild in 1824 ✍

Monkeyflower is most frequent along the margins of streams, ditches and rivers but may also be seen around lakes or springs 💦

The Sussex Pride was named the county flower of Sussex in a 2002 Plantlife survey - and name aside, it's a good fit! 😂

The wildflower can be found almost exclusively on the chalk grassland of the South Downs but also may be spotted in some other areas 🥀

It's also called the 'round-headed rampion' for obvious reasons! 📍
