LET'S BUST THE BREAD MYTH TOGETHER! 🦢🌾
It has been an incredibly tough year for UK waterfowl. Exceptional dry spells have turned our grasslands yellow, leaving very little grass or healthy water w**d for birds to graze on.
Coupled with devastating outbreaks of botulism, our young cygnets, goslings, and ducklings are entering the cold seasons hungry and unprepared and without critical fat reserves.
To make matters worse, a previous viral social media trend (good intentions but wrongly) claimed bread is toxic to birds. Overnight, well-meaning animal lovers stopped feeding them, costing our waterfowl MILLIONS of life-saving slices of bread.
With a severe winter predicted for 2026/2027, our birds are in genuine peril. They need us now more than ever.
THE TRUTH ABOUT BREAD & WHEAT 🗣️
✅ You absolutely can feed bread to waterfowl
🍔 Is bread a nutrient-rich superfood?
No, absolutely not. It’s essentially a "fast food" that provides quick calories and energy. It’s a supplement to their natural food and a filler.
When birds are cold and hungry and food is scarce, that calorie-rich fuel is a lifeline! It fills their bellies, helps them regulate their body temperature through a freezing night, and gives them the energy to move and protect themselves.
In fact, one of the filler foods regularly used by wildlife rescues are floating pellets made primarily of wheat—the exact same base ingredient as bread!
If you are heading down to visit your local flock, here is how you can help:
🍞 The Bread Basket: Ordinary bread is a wonderful energy booster!
Brown or seeded bread is definitely best if you have a choice, but if you only have white bread, please use it—white bread is always better than hunger!
⛔️ Stale bread is perfectly fine, but never feed mouldy bread, as mould toxins can be fatal to wildlife.
🥗 Healthy Sides: If you can, mix things up by adding grain seed, chopped lettuce, spinach, or defrosted peas and sweetcorn for an extra nutrient boost.
🙏 Please don't throw away your leftover slices. Your feathered friends will be incredibly grateful for the warmth and energy!
Thank you for being such a caring community and looking out for our wildlife. ❤️ They need us more than ever
