Assalam alaikum,
ุฅููููุง ููููููู ููุฅููููุง ุฅููููููู ุฑูุงุฌูุนูููู
Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.
It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Mehmuda Akbar Patel, affectionately known to all who loved her as Mem, who returned to the mercy of Allah on 14 August 2026, aged 54.
Mem was truly one of the gentlest souls you could ever meet. She had a heart that was made for giving, caring and loving. So much of her adult life was devoted to looking after those she loved. She cared for our mum for many years, giving her time, patience and love without ever asking for anything in return. And when our dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Mem was there again. She devoted herself to caring for him through one of the most difficult periods of our lives, right until he passed away just 22 months ago.
That was simply who Mem was. She cared. She gave. She loved.
She was the kind of person who would always be there if you needed her. No matter what she was going through herself, she somehow found the strength to be there for someone else. She had a beautiful smile that seemed to come so naturally to her, and she had a way of making people feel safe, welcome and loved.
Mem adored children, and she loved her nieces and nephews so very much. She was wonderful with them, and her love for them was unmistakable. She had a special warmth about her that children were naturally drawn to.
She was loved by so many because what you saw with Mem was what you got. She was kind, generous, genuine and completely authentic. There was nothing pretentious about her. Her heart was sincere, her love was real, and her friendship was precious.
Mem endured so much adversity in her life. She had many health struggles and lived with pain, yet she rarely allowed anyone to see how much she was suffering. She carried her difficulties with an incredible quiet strength. Somehow, despite everything, she continued to smile. She continued to laugh. She continued to find happiness in the simplest things.
And that is one of the things I will remember most about her.
She was happy with the simple things in life.
She did not need much to make her happy. A conversation, family around her, a laugh, a meal shared with someone she loved ,these were the things that mattered to her.
And she was an amazing cook.
One of my most precious memories is that she made me a couple of dishes just before I left for home last Monday. At the time, I had no idea that those would become such a precious final memory. I will treasure that food, but even more than the food, I will treasure the love with which she made it for me. That was Mem, always giving, always caring, always finding a way to show her love.
My heart is broken that she is no longer here.
But alongside the immense sadness, I hold onto one beautiful thought that brings me some peace:
Mem is now at peace.
No more pain.
No more illness.
No more suffering.
No more of the burdens she carried so quietly.
After spending so much of her life caring for others, I pray that Allah now cares for her with a mercy beyond anything we can imagine.
And perhaps the greatest comfort of all is knowing that she has been reunited with the two people who meant so much to her, our beloved mum and our beloved dad.
After caring for them both so selflessly, I pray that Allah has brought them together again in a place where there is no illness, no sadness and no separation. May they sit together once more, surrounded by the mercy and light of Allah.
Mem, you gave so much of yourself to the people you loved. You were a daughter who cared for her parents, a sister who was always there, an aunt who adored her nieces and nephews, and a friend whose kindness will never be forgotten.
You left your mark on so many hearts.
Your smile will be remembered.
Your laughter will be remembered.
Your kindness will be remembered.
Your love will be remembered.
And most of all, you will be remembered.
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught us that when a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them. We pray that the love and goodness Mem poured into others throughout her life continue to be a source of reward for her, and we will continue to make dua for her.
Ya Allah, forgive our beloved Mem.
Ya Allah, have mercy upon her.
Ya Allah, overlook her shortcomings and accept all the good she did.
Ya Allah, illuminate her grave and make it a garden from the gardens of Jannah.
Ya Allah, grant her peace, comfort and ููุฑ in her resting place.
Ya Allah, reward her for every moment she spent caring for our parents.
Reward her for every act of kindness, every smile, every meal she prepared, every person she helped and every hardship she endured with patience.
Ya Allah, make every pain she suffered a means of purification and elevation of her rank.
Ya Allah, grant her the highest levels of Jannatul Firdaus without reckoning.
Ya Allah, reunite her with our mum and dad and with all those she loved, in the eternal gardens of Paradise.
And Ya Allah, give us the sabr to live with her absence and the strength to honour her memory through our own lives.

My beautiful sister, Mem , thank you for every smile, every laugh, every act of kindness, every meal, every conversation, every moment you gave to us and every bit of love you poured into our family.
You spent so much of your life looking after everyone else.
Now it is time for you to rest.
May Allah hold you in His infinite mercy.
May He illuminate your grave with Noor.
May He elevate your status beyond measure.
May He reward you for a lifetime of love, patience and sacrifice.
May He grant you Jannatul Firdaus.
And may He reunite you with Mum and Dad in a place where we will one day all meet again, Insha'Allah.
Until then, you will remain forever in our hearts.
Sleep peacefully, my beautiful sister.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.
May Allah grant our beloved Mem the highest rank in Jannah. Ameen Ya Rabb.
Please remember Mem in your duas.
