Award winning Saffron Acres and the Heath are beautiful green spaces in the heart of Leicester.

Whether you are volunteering, attending an event, accessing our support services or just visiting you can't help but notice nature all around you. Spend a little time here and you will benefit in so many ways.

But did you know that by increasing your Nature Connection you are also more likely to take positive actions to reduce climate change?

The UK Universities Climate Network say that "Climate action is driven by a close connection to nature. The United Nations have called for transformational change in people’s relationship with nature as a crucial element in efforts to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises."

Derby University has pioneered research into nature connection and the human-nature relationship and through their Pathways to Nature Connection framework have identified the types of activity that will improve the human-nature relationship (individuals and workplaces) to encourage climate action and improve human wellbeing.

The 5 pathways to nature connection are:

1. Contact
Explore, take a closer look and get in touch with the natural world. Engage with nature through the senses for pleasure.

2. Beauty
Take time to appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature

3. Meaning
Consider what nature means to you.

4. Emotion
Find happiness and wonder. Reflect on your feelings about nature.

5. Compassion
Think about what you could do for nature.

Find them all here at Saffron Acres in our events and more!

Learning from Nature - Water

Join us for the next in our series of workshops building an understanding of how we can use Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares, combined with a set of principles that mimic natural systems to make best use of time, space and energy while creating beauty and abundance. Each workshop can be taken as a standalone contributing 6 hours to a full Permaculture qualification or just for interest.

Permaculture principles offer an approach to sustainable living that can benefit rivers and water conservation. We can use water-wise methods across a range of human activities along with improving soil health to contribute to a healthier, more balanced relationship between humankind and our precious water resources.

Funded by for local residents of LE2, open to non-residents with an invitation to donate.

Another enjoyable funded Ember and Earth session today saw us foraging for wild greens (hogweed, nettles and wild garlic) to accompany potatoes baked off in the Dutch oven. They were delicious!

We weeded, then sowed beans and peas in our temporary garden plot but ran out of time to make our willow plant supports.

Growing your own food is the best way to cut down on food miles, but if you cant do that, try buying locally grown where you can. Its good for you and good for the planet 🌎

Or maybe volunteer at a growing project like Saffron Acres and see if there's surplus seasonal produce to take home!

20th May is World Bee Day!

Did you know that bees are responsible for pollinating roughly one-third of the food we eat and over 75% of the world's food crops?

Bees and many other pollinating insects are declining in numbers. World Bee Day provides an opportunity to remind ourselves of the simple actions we can take to protect pollinators and their habitats to improve their abundance and diversity. These actions also support the sustainable development of beekeeping.

Simple things you can do to help.

Plant Native Flowers: Support local biodiversity by adding bee-friendly, nectar-rich plants to your garden.
Participate in No Mow May and Let it Bloom June! Join this popular initiative by leaving your lawn to grow, providing vital food for pollinators.
Avoid Pesticides: Limit the use of chemical pesticides in your outdoor spaces.

Saffron Acres and Saffron Heath are both alive with pollinating insects because we do all of the above - if you want to see these principles in action come to one of our sessions to take a look for yourself.

We also keep our own honey bee hives, where the bees are maintained in an ethical manner and allowed to keep enough honey in reserve to not need artificial or supplementary feeding over winter. This may mean that some years there isn't enough honey for us to collect, so our harvest is never guaranteed.

Support your local bees!

Join us for the next session in our Learning from Nature series on the theme of Water

This workshop is part of a series that started in February and is spread over a number of months. Although the themes add to learning from previous sessions, each day may also be booked as an individual session and can count as a further 6 hours each towards a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC). The sessions build an understanding of how we can use Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares, combined with a set of principles that mimic natural systems to make best use of time, space and energy while creating beauty and abundance.

Taking a neglected area of our site at the Saffron Acres Project earmarked to be the site for our new LEAF project as an example, you'll learn the tools to create a design that meets the needs of people and wildlife - food, shelter, nourishment, beauty, companionship.

The morning will be spent walking a short distance to the Washbrook, observing the river in its landscape, sampling the water to see what wildlife we can find and finding out what this tells us about the water quality. We will also learn how to observe and record the river banks and water quality through a series of simple tests.

We will return to Saffron Heath, for a lunch break - please bring a packed lunch.

After lunch, we will look at issues surrounding water use and scarcity, and water justice, with a focus on practical steps we can take to conserve and reuse water in our permaculture designs. The last element of the day will be to start thinking about your own designs.

Free of charge to local residents in LE2, funded by
