The women who started it all✨

The Women’s Rugby World Cup is in full swing, and the origins of the tournament are all down to these 4 women.

The former Richmond Rugby Club players came together to organise the first women’s tournament in 1991, with no sponsors, no backing from the International Rugby Board and all working full-time jobs.

Their story is told in a recent episode of BBC’s One Show, which revisits their epic achievements and what it means to them to see a Women’s World Cup coming back to the UK in 2025.

FAN began as an archive of the Women's Liberation Movement, but we also have materials about current campaigns. We recently received a donation of leaflets and other materials from the No Men In Women's Prisons campaign, including this rosette.

Although many campaigns and actions are digital-based these days, there are still lots of other formats being produced, such as leaflets, banners and textiles. We welcome donations of any materials connected to current campaigns.

On Yorkshire Day, 1st August, FAN celebrated with a stall at Bradford’s Darley Street Market. The packed-out event, organised by the Women of West Yorkshire Network had a diverse programme of entertainment, from speeches, songs and dance to a glittering performance by the Bradford Belles.
We had our hands full as women enjoyed our display and told us of their own struggles and successes against sexism, misogyny and inequality. Huddersfield nurses remembered their successful 1980s fight against the closure of their nurses’ home, and one woman, on seeing the flyer displayed, fondly recalled attending the 1996 conference on Violence, Abuse and Women’s Citizenship.
We are keen to promote what we do and the treasures we hold, to ensure that feminist activism is not forgotten. Do let us know about any events we might attend.
