PAFRAS

PAFRAS - Positive Action For Refugees and Asylum Seekers - is a small grassroots organisation based in Leeds.

We work with asylum seekers and the wider community to counter the effects of enforced destitution and increase acess to justice. We provide crisis intervention, advocacy, Level 1 and 2 OISC regulated casework and immigration advice and specialise integrated mental health support. PAFRAS also has a holistic and intensive service dedicated for unaccompanied young migrants aged 16-24 years old.

🎉HAPPY RETIREMENT SHARON🎉

This week we say farewell to our mental health support worker Sharon who has been with us for the last six and a half years. Sharon has had such a huge impact on the people we work with and embodies everything great about PAFRAS. Sharon's work has been underpinned by an unwavering commitment to solidarity, justice, compassion and kindness and we are really going to miss her. Not only does she bring so much to the lives of our clients, she's been so influential and supportive to staff members through thick and thin and we really love and value her.

We're so happy that she's now got plenty of time to enjoy her caravan, wild swimming and walking her beautiful dog. To say a happy and restful retirement is deserved is an understatement. Big love Shazza, you're the best! 💕💕

❄️🌲 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🌲❄️

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from team PAFRAS - thank you for all your support this year! Throughout 2025 we have been struck by the disparity between the divisive rhetoric and policies of those in power and the love and solidarity of the community in Leeds.

In the face of the ever sprawling and vicious hostile environment, it's so reassuring to know that folks in Leeds support each other and look out for one another. As we enter the new year, it is this sense of community that is a source of hope. We are all from somewhere but we're all Leeds.

We'll be closed from Christmas eve for some much needed rest until the 2nd January. Our next drop-in on Wednesday 7th January.

Thank you for all the support with the Christmas presents campaign, your support has been overwhelming and hugely appreciated. Over the past week, we’ve distributed food and gifts to nearly 200 people seeking asylum in Leeds.

At a time when people seeking safety are being scapegoated and dehumanised, acts of solidarity, kindness and compassion are so important.

Huge thanks to everyone who donated, shared, and got the word out—and to , LCC and for their continued solidarity and support.

We'll be closed from Christmas Eve until January 2nd for some much needed rest ❄️

At Christmas time, we like to gift our clients and their families a small present.

This year has been a particularly tough year for folks in the local community who are seeking asylum. If you are in a position to do so please consider buying a small gift for one of our clients or their children.

For ease, we've created an Amazon wishlist (link in bio) but if you do not wish to use Amazon, please just use the wishlist as guidance. Please note that we have limited storage space in our offices so all presents need to be small.

Everybody deserves to feel the joy of receiving a gift at Christmas so please share this post widely with your friends, family and colleagues

We are currently looking to recruit a passionate and committed Mental Health Support Worker to offer mental health support and onwards referrals for PAFRAS clients.

This is a varied and interesting role which involves establishing relationships with people accessing PAFRAS who are experiencing mental health difficulties, which may be existing and long standing or may be as a result of trauma and/or the hostile environment.

Salary: FTE £30,786 (£24, 628.80)

Hours: 28 per week

Contract: Permanent

Closing Date: 9am on 17th November

🌱PAFRAS VOLUNTEER SUMMER SOCIAL🌱

Huge thanks to all the amazing volunteers who joined us at Roundhay Park last week for our summer social! ☀️🧺

Whether it’s interpreting, offering advice at drop-ins, or making brews for folks, they consistently show up for each other and our clients.

They've built a beautiful community rooted in welcome, solidarity, and everyday resistance to the hostile environment and we couldn't do what we do without them!

🍅🌱 PAFRAS TRIP TO KIRKSTALL VALLEY FARM 🌱🍅

This week, our World Cafe crew visited for a wander and a good ol’ chat about all things veggies, plants, and growing 🌱🌻

Tucked away off Kirkstall Road, the farm offers our clients a peaceful space to relax and be, away from the stresses and anxieties of everyday life.

For many of our clients, growing food is a meaningful way to reconnect with their roots and feel a sense of belonging that stretches across both space and time. 🌍🌾 Getting stuck in down at the community farm helps establish a sense of a self that counters the top down identity constructions of 'asylum seeker' or 'refugee' and provides a place to cultivate connection to community.

A lot of our clients have plenty of growing experience and can’t wait to volunteer down at the farm
