The Health (NHS Modernisation) Bill was published this week, and it confirms plans to abolish Healthwatch.

We want to be clear: we are still here, still listening, and still working as normal. Nothing changes until at least April 2027.

But the clock is ticking. Parliament debates the Bill for the first time on 1 June, and Leeds MPs need to hear from people in their communities before that day.

Healthwatch Leeds exists because people in Leeds need somewhere independent to share their experiences of health and care. Somewhere that is not part of the NHS or local authority. Somewhere that speaks up without fear or favour.

If you think that matters, please write to your MP. We have made it as easy as possible. There is a template letter and step-by-step guide on our website.

Thank you to for hosting us for at their annual conference!

We had so much fun being tourists in Birmingham and adding our voice to national work making sure paediatricians are able to listen to young people's experiences and hopes for their care. We were pleased to have the chance to share what we know about young people's experiences of four key topics: growing up in a digital age, mental health, transitions to adult services, and neighbourhood health (getting healthcare support in your local community).

Big well done and thank you to our volunteers Phoebe, Evan, Elsa, Rizwana, and Oliver for attending! 🙌

Yesterday, we went to the launch event of the Inside the Cage scheme in partnership with The Mental Shift. It was set up in response to the death by su***de of a young MMA fighter in Tingley who attended the gym.

Kai (mental shift founder) attempted to take his own life several times as a teenager, and at 17, got into MMA and created this CIC. Now aged 21, he is partnering with MMA gyms in Newcastle and Leeds to provide early, consistent support for young males who are struggling—not just with mental health, but with identity, belonging, and the pressures of growing up in environments that don’t always understand them. Essentially, via local authority commissioning, donations, fundraising and grants, he can support young lads at risk to attend MMA gyms and receive free training/coaching/PT/peer support.

Spring is here and we've had our April meeting 🌱

It was a really lovely one - we were lucky to be joined by who spoke to us about her role as a local Councillor and chairing the Health and Wellbeing Board in Leeds, as well as her background in community and youth work.

We were also joined by Belén from , who told us about the difference our most recent project looking into how services can make mental health support easier to access has had on their service.

It was so great to hear from both of them about what is going on in the city to improve young people's experiences of health and care services, and how Youthwatch can be involved too! Thanks so much to all who joined :)
