Our Story

West Leeds Gateway Club opened in 1973 through the determination of a handful of Leeds residents who raised donations from local businesses. Leeds City Council permitted the group to use the Youth Centre at Thornhill Middle School free of charge once a week and a minibus was hired through the Leeds Community Transport Scheme. The Club was staffed by unpaid volunteers and drivers from the local community, schools and churches and the members were initially from a few Leeds Residential Hostels. Word soon spread through the Leeds 12 community which steadily increased the membership and in 1975 we affiliated to MENCAP under their Gateway scheme. West Leeds Gateway Club has been affiliated to MENCAP ever since and is one of only a few clubs in this region still entitled to use the term Gateway Club in the name.
