Maybe Sailing

Maybe Sailing Maybe Sailing provides sail training opportunities and tall ship adventure holidays to people of all ages.

From 1 day taster sails, to 4 week expeditions and ocean crossings we have something for everyone. Tall Ship MAYBE is a traditional Dutch sailing ketch, launched in 1933 and was designed for round the world cruising. In recent years she has been completely restored by her current owner and returned to sailing in 2007. Tall Ship MAYBE took part in the first ever Tall Ships Race in 1956. She made a

successful return to the Tall Ships Races in 2009 in the Baltic’s and completed a full schedule of Tall Ships Races and Regattas during 2010. During the winter of 2010/2011 ‘Maybe’ underwent further restoration to transform her back to her former glory, sailing with an original gaff rig again for the 2011 sailing season along with almost complete refurbishment below deck. The winter of 2011/2012 we made further improvements to the inside cabins and to gaff the mizzen. Maybe Sailing offers sailing voyages from short sails of 1-4 days to longer sails including taking part in the prestigious Tall Ships Races annually. When ‘Maybe’ is in the UK she is based on the East Coast of Yorkshire but spends several months of the season sailing in European waters. We offer sail training opportunities for trainee crew of all ages but strongly believe in the benefits sail training has as a role in youth development. Our aim is to provide many young people, aged 25 years old and under, with an unforgettable sailing experience where they can develop valuable life skills.

‘Maybe’ has the capacity for 18 crew members on each voyage which includes 4 permanent crew and 14 places for trainee crew members. She has extensive comfortable accommodation below deck which has been newly refurbished. In 2013, MAYBE won the Tall Ships Races overall for Class B!

We’ve Made It to St. Kilda! 🌊

What an incredible few days aboard Blue Clipper.

After sailing from Canna via Skye, North Uist and the stunning Sound of Harris, the excitement onboard grew as we set our sights on one of the most remote destinations in the British Isles.

With sails set and a steady westerly course, we enjoyed some of the best sailing of the voyage. Surrounded by mist and fog, the Outer Hebrides gradually disappeared behind us until, suddenly, St. Kilda emerged from the clouds. Guest Sam was first to spot land – a sight none of us will forget!

Towering cliffs, rolling green hills, puffins, seals and a fascinating history awaited us ashore. Exploring the island's old settlement was a real highlight and a reminder of the resilience of those who once lived here.

Back onboard, we celebrated a successful arrival with great food, good company and even a few freshly caught mackerel thanks to Sam's first cast of the evening!

Tomorrow we’ll explore more of this remarkable archipelago and, hopefully, witness thousands of seabirds around the famous Stacks.

What an adventure so far.

Our latest voyage aboard Blue Clipper is off to a fantastic start!
After welcoming our new guests in Oban, we set sail with one goal in mind: making the most of the weather and hopefully finding a window to reach St. Kilda.
The Scottish summer quickly reminded us who's in charge, bringing mist, drizzle and shifting winds, but that didn't stop the adventure. We sailed through the Sound of Mull, enjoyed a beautiful sunset in Tobermory, celebrated birthdays with cake, spotted dolphins and seals, and even landed a few fish (which were promptly returned to the sea!).
From hoisting sails to taking the helm, everyone has quickly become part of the crew. After some excellent sailing past Mull, Muck, Eigg and Rum, we dropped anchor in Canna, ready for the next leg of our journey.
All well onboard! ⚓

This morning the sun was out and it was a welcome surprise!

At Loch na Droma Buidhe the kayaks and paddle boards came out, with some guests paddling ashore while others stayed onboard to head aloft up the schooner mast. The views from above were extraordinary calm waters and stunning landscapes stretching for miles.

The sunshine was enjoyed by everyone, whether relaxing on deck, out on the water, or even taking a swim! Some jumped in from the boat… others accidentally fell off paddle boards!

After lunch we headed towards Lismore Island, passing through the narrow channel between Oronsay and the mainland before hoisting the main and schooner sails. With little wind we motor sailed down the Sound of Mull, enjoying a calm and peaceful afternoon on deck.

Dropping the sails later was a perfect team effort from crew and guests alike, with two beautiful sail drops that especially pleased the deck team.

This evening we anchored in Bernera Bay off Lismore Island. Some guests went ashore to explore the old castle while others stayed onboard enjoying drinks in the sunshine.

Sadly, this is our last night onboard together, and it’s been lovely to see friendships grow throughout the week. Tonight brings a quiz from Flick and a singing competition hosted by Chris we’ll soon find out who knows the most and sings the loudest!

🌊 Blue Clipper Blog Sailing the Hebrides 22nd–25th May 🌊

Our Hebrides voyage began in Oban with afternoon cake, sail setting and everyone quickly learning the ropes aboard Blue Clipper. Sailing past Duart Castle and Lady’s Rock, we anchored for the night beneath the colourful houses of Tobermory.

Over the following days we explored Tobermory and Canna, enjoyed incredible sailing around Rum, spotted dolphins playing at the bow, searched for puffins, and even had a few brave morning swimmers! Guests learned passage planning, took turns on the helm, painted watercolours in the saloon and enjoyed evenings filled with card games, stories and good food.

One highlight came as Blue Clipper surged through the Hebrides at an exciting 11.6 knots, giving everyone an unforgettable sail despite the mist and drizzle. Another memorable moment was navigating the narrow passage near Oronsay with the whole crew gathered on deck watching the depth sounding from the bowsprit.

Now anchored peacefully in Loch na Droma Buidhe, spirits are high onboard and everyone is looking forward to the adventures still to come.

All well onboard ⚓

A true Scottish sailing day aboard Blue Clipper grey skies, rain showers, colourful houses in Tobermory, and plenty of smiles along the way. Our guests took shelter in The Mishnish, explored the famous town from Balamory, and stocked up on puffin souvenirs before we sailed on through the Sound of Mull.

By evening the skies had cleared as we anchored in Scallastle Bay for our final night of the voyage. Good food, a fun quiz, music from Bob, and a stunning orange sunset made for a perfect ending.

The last two days on Blue Clipper have been unforgettable. We woke to perfectly glassy waters, bright sunshine, and some incredible wildlife sightings. While Rod had no luck fishing, the morning quickly made up for it when we spotted both a seal and a whale alongside the ship, the whale even circled us several times while some of us were climbing aloft on the schooner mast, giving us breathtaking views from above.

Later, we sailed to a small bay near Salen under beautiful sunny skies.Salen is a village on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. It is on the east coast of the island. The local pub may have been closed for the day, but a walk ashore and more seal spotting along the coastline made for a perfect evening. As the sun set over Blue Clipper, we finished the day relaxing in the saloon with Bob playing guitar.

All well onboard.

Three amazing days aboard Blue Clipper so far 🌊⛵

Our adventure began in beautiful Oban, sailing through the Sound of Kerrera and around the Isle of Mull with guests learning the ropes, hoisting sails, and settling into life at sea.

Since then we’ve enjoyed breathtaking sunrises, peaceful anchorages, incredible food, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. On Lunga in the Treshnish Isles, guests got up close with hundreds of puffins, an experience nobody will forget 🐧✨

The journey has continued around Mull with fantastic sailing, trips ashore on Ulva and Eigg, cave explorations, afternoon cake on deck, and crystal-clear evenings at anchor. We even welcomed a tiny new crew member a little yellow duck who bravely climbed the mast to inspect the rigging 🦆⚓

We’re still keeping watch for whales as the voyage continues…

All well onboard 💙

⚓ Our first Scottish voyage of the season on Blue Clipper is complete and what a trip it’s been!
Our first voyage of the Scottish season has officially come to an end as we arrive in Oban after departing Liverpool following a short refit.

The trip north has been full of sunshine, great sailing, and plenty of memorable moments. Everyone quickly settled into life at sea, eagerly helping with sail handling and enjoying the best spots on deck whenever the weather allowed.

We celebrated two birthdays onboard during the voyage. Engineer Joe welcomed in his 21st while greeting guests and getting stuck into life onboard, while voyage crew Suzanne celebrated her birthday the following day, proudly wearing the birthday badge all day long!

One of the highlights early in the trip was anchoring off the Isle of Man, where guests enjoyed exploring ashore while onboard our brand new mizzen sail made her debut as we sailed away. Since then, there has been no shortage of activity, with countless sail changes, tacks, and some fantastic sailing conditions. At one point we even reached 11 knots!

The Scottish weather has treated us incredibly well. We sailed past Islay with six sails set before stopping in Port Ellen, where guests enjoyed whisky distillery tours and even whisky ice cream. From there we continued to Jura, anchoring in the stunning Lagg Bay after another brilliant day under sail.

Now safely arrived in Oban, tired hands and aching muscles are proof of a fantastic first voyage. Spirits are high, everyone has learnt so much already, and we’re excited for what the rest of the Scottish season has in store.

All well onboard!
