Smart Works Leeds helps unemployed women with clothing and coaching ahead of an interview.

Yesterday we had the pleasure to host our first jobs fair in York! We supported 50 brilliant attendees by connecting them with employers and support organisations, and with a CV Clinic run by expert coaches 💡

Thank you to everyone who came, our partners who held stalls, and to Beyondly for powering our jobs fair and running our successful CV clinic 🙌

A huge thank you to the Department for Work and Pensions and their head office staff at Quarry House for their incredibly successful clothing drive and bake sale this month.

We’re delighted that a permanent donation station has now been installed in Quarry House, making it easy for colleagues to donate workwear to Smart Works throughout the year. So far, an incredible 326 items have already been collected, including clothing, toiletries, shoes, and handbags.

In addition, the bake sale raised a fantastic £426.

Both the donations and the funds raised will help us support women across Yorkshire to build their confidence, secure employment, and transform their lives. Having recently moved into a new, larger centre, we are now able to support more women than ever before. Contributions like these ensure that every client leaves Smart Works with exactly what they need to succeed.

Partnerships like the one we share with DWP make this work possible, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Alexandra was unable to stay at her previous job, and spent 3 and a half months searching for work, but to her it felt like 3 and a half years. During this time she applied for between 100 and 200 jobs. During her job search she often received no response to applications, or she’d go through to an interview and be ghosted. Or, when she did receive a rejection, there would be no feedback. This was really demoralising.

We supported Alexandra with a tailored mock interview, and she selected an outfit from our wardrobe to wear. Alexandra found both the dressing and the coaching really empowering. She especially appreciated the help with understanding what questions to ask the employer, and how to talk about pay and work schedules.
Alexandra went to her interview feeling very comfortable and confident. She secured a role with a retailer.

Alexandra has been in the role for three months now, she is having a great experience- her manager and team are excellent, and she works with people every day which she loves.

Alexandra said, ‘for me, my job is a really really really big part of my life. I spend most of my time there. Being happy in my job, means I am going to be happy every day. When I wake up, I am happy to go to work. Starting work is a big achievement for me.’

Alexandra said ‘coming to Smart Works is one of the best experiences I have ever had.’

Our outreach team have been busy throughout May connecting with our referral partners and potential clients all across Yorkshire ⭐️

Last year we supported over 1000 women with our tailored coaching and dressing service, and many more through group workshops💡

68% of clients supported ahead of an interview secure employment 💼

As demand for our service grows, we are committed to supporting the thousands of women across Yorkshire that need our help. With that need in mind, we have a new home- a space that will allow us to support 100 women a week. Our new home accommodates a bigger wardrobe, a virtual dressing studio, space to host group workshops, and will allow us to offer a more accessible and inclusive service ⭐️

We have been working tirelessly to fundraise for the build of our new centre and with the support of our incredible network of supporters- businesses and individuals- we have made significant steps to do so 🎉

We are delighted to share that we are have moved into our new home this week! Our service opens today, from our new address: Floor 4, Mill 1, Mabgate Mills, Macaulay Street, Leeds, LS9 7DZ 🏡

We can’t wait to welcome clients, partners and supporters to our new space- stay tuned for our launch event! 🚀

One year ago we embarked on a special project to expand our services into Bradford. We set out with a goal in mind- to work with women in Bradford to build their confidence, supporting them to secure employment and change the trajectory of their lives.

As our first year draws to a close, we are delighted to share the progress of our project to date.

Our achievements include:
🚀 179 outreach engagements attended
🚀 32 group sessions delivered supporting 266 women
🚀 147 unique beneficiaries accessed our core service
🚀 39 women have got the job so far

Our project to reach communities in Bradford has been made possible thanks to funding provided by the Charitable Foundation. We would like to sincerely thank the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation for empowering us to bring Smart Works to Bradford. We would also like to give a huge shout out to our partners, who have welcomed us to Bradford and collaborated with us to bring value and support to their customers.

As move into our second year of the project, we will expand the reach and visibility of core service provision within Bradford, develop workshop offering and expand its remit and reach, pilot core service delivery within Bradford and more.

🎉 Masonmeh got the job! 🎉

When we met Masonmeh she was a year into her journey to find a job. One of the barriers for Masonmeh was not yet having work experience in the UK. She said that everything here was new for her- from the language, to the culture, the processes involved in looking for a job in the UK and more. She told us that she lost count of how many jobs she had applied for.

Masonmeh learned about Smart Works with her local library, who referred her to us.

She came to see us ahead of a brilliant opportunity- an interview to be a Graduate Engineer Geologist. After her appointment with Smart Works, she got the job!

Masonmeh said that 'a job for me means being in society and doing something meaningful.'

She added 'I am very much glad that I found you. Smart Works is a community helping women find their confidence. Smart Works is friendly, essential and supportive. This service is important because having more confident women in society makes the whole society a better place. In most cases, women need just a little push to fly.'

🎉 Samantha got the job(s)! 🎉

Huge congratulations to our client Samantha, who has secured not one, but two jobs! One, a role in the NHS as a receptionist, and another an admin position.

We met Samantha after she was made redundant, when she joined a training course and one of our trusted partners referred her to us.

We helped Samantha ahead of her job interviews by providing interview clothing and coaching tailored to the jobs she was going for.

She said ‘the interview prep and clothes really lifted my spirits. I tried on things that I felt amazing and comfortable in. I cannot stop telling people about the amazing company for empowering me when I needed it. Smart Works is inspirational!’

Samantha told us that getting a job for her means ‘security and independence for myself and my son.’
