Seven anti-racist activists were arrested this weekend during a huge counter-demonstration in the city centre.

This Saturday, UKIP (a far-right group calling for mass deportations) shipped in around 100 flag-wavers and live-streamers from as far as the south coast and marched through the city centre spouting racist hate, towards a hotel housing asylum seekers. Despite enormous numbers (estimates up to 1000) of Sheffield locals turning out in opposition to the march and in support of asylum seekers, police were determined to force the march through.

In a disgusting effort by the cops, hundreds of police from across the country, wielding batons and others on horseback, violently forced counter-protestors out of the road, clearing the way for UKIP’s march to go on. At several points throughout the day, counter-demonstrators were met with huge amounts of violence from police, and several arrests took place. As usual, cops looked the other way as the members of the far-right crowd directed hate and violence at both members of the public and counter-protestors.

Seven anti-racist activists are now faced with various charges, and expect to appear in court in the coming months. Court costs (as well as days off work to appear) can become very expensive and it’s imperative that our friends are not alone through this process. Let's not pretend this is anything different. The government, opposition and the mainstream media know EXACTLY what they are doing.

By focusing on the mistaken releases of migrants prisoners it helps to create an image that these people are more dangerous than a non migrant prisoner. It means we focus on how dangerous that individual might be and people automatically think they have escaped from prison because words like "manhunt" are then used.

It diverts attention away from the 280+ others thay have been mistakenly released who had no media attention at all. It also distracts from considering how under resourced and under staffed prisons are after 15 years of austerity. It also distracts from any thought of why we lock up so many people when they are no threat to the community - for example people holding meetings about protests or sat in silence holding a placard.

Are we to believe that the 280 odd other prisoners are fairly decent people who no doubt went to the nearest police station having realised the mistake? Im guessing none of them were charged with s*x or violent crimes?

Its shameful that we are being fooled into playing their game rather than ask important questions about those failings.
