Lancaster & District Birdwatching Society The Lancaster and District Bird Watching Society covers an extensive area of north Lancashire, south Cumbria, and North Yorkshire

Founded in 1959, LDBWS collects records of birds seen in the area, organises local surveys and contributes to national surveys arranged by the BTO and other bodies. The society also has a programme of indoor meetings where members enjoy interesting talks from a wide range of experts.

Look at this fantastic snap taken by Emma Kelly on Saturday's LDBWS field trip to Woolston Eyes.

The event gave attendees access to a permit-only site to see the north west's only breeding Black-necked Grebes.

Dont forget - our members get free access to all of our events for just £16 per year!

We always see Sanderlings passing through the Bay in late spring on the way to their breeding grounds in the high Arctic, but this has been a particularly good year at Heysham with flocks of up to five hundred the last week. These photos from Malcolm Downham show just a few of these stunning birds from last Saturday morning.

Little Gulls are a scarce passage migrant in the area, but they've been a regular sight at RSPB Leighton Moss over the past few weeks.

Up to four birds have been seen over the past fortnight, including this fabulous adult in breeding plumage. Thanks Steve Ripley for these lovely shots taken on Thursday.

As in most years, the last migrant passerine to arrive in our area for the summer was the Spotted Flycatcher. The first bird of the year was heard singing last Wednesday, and more will no doubt be seen at breeding sites in Bowland and South Cumbria over the next few months.

Fancy a chance of seeing one for yourself? There are still spaces left on our Barbondale field trip this Saturday. Email us at [email protected] to book your place.
