Batala Lancaster Lancaster's original samba reggae drumming band. Part of Batala Mundo. ❤️🖤 There are now over 40 such groups across the world playing the same funky rhythms.

Batala is a form of Samba Drum music which originates in Salvador de Bahia in North Eastern Brazil. Batala was formed as the European wing of Cortejo Afro (a style of Brazilian Samba) by Giba Gonçalves in Paris in 1997. Giba is the maestro of the Batala sound, which he composed after the style of his home town Salvador, in Brazil. The music has its roots in African traditional music which found its way to Brazil and has been incorporated in to Brazilian culture since. Using this influence, Giba formed a 60-piece drumming band, called it Batala, and encouraged anyone with an interest in his music to form their own Batala group under his name. Samba-reggae compositions with noted African influences beaten out on four different types of drum. The result is a raw, hypnotic combination of emotion, beats and rhythm. Batala's success is illustrated in its impressive CV: Glastonbury; the Notting Hill Carnival; Edinburgh Fringe and many more.

The end of our set in Dalton Square at Lancaster Music Festival yesterday. Thanks to Love Lancaster BID for booking us and to everyone who came and watched.

Huge thanks to all the festival organisers, for another fantastic weekend. Most of the band were out and about all weekend enjoying the amazing variety of entertainment throughout the city, and we loved being part of it ❤️🖤

We played our second gig of the weekend at Preston XMiles half marathon and 10K this morning.Well done to all the runner...

We played our second gig of the weekend at Preston XMiles half marathon and 10K this morning.

Well done to all the runners, but a special well done to our repinique player Katie who ran an impressive 1.28, and then drummed for the rest of the runners!

Today we also wished au revoir to our caxia player Dave. It's not good bye though, because we hope we'll see you again very soon playing with our friends at Batala Mersey ❤️🖤

We had a Batala road trip over to support Macmillan Cancer Support and everyone taking part in the Great North Run today.

We were delighted to be able to support two of our own players who were running today - Dobra player Jo and bass player Jane - who detoured through the band to give everyone a high 5! 🖐️

It was a wonderful sunny day with a brilliant atmosphere, and we were joined by Karen, Louie and Emma from Batala Bangor and Chel from Batala Mersey. Thanks so much for making the trip. It's always a pleasure to play with you ❤️🖤
