Vauxhall Community Law Centre

Vauxhall Community Law Centre Face to face, free legal advice and representation in welfare benefits, debt and housing.

The Vauxhall Community Law Centre provides invaluable representation and advice to people living primarily within the North Liverpool, but provide a service across the Liverpool City Region. Founded in 1973, the Centre offers free advice and legal representation in respect of welfare rights issues, debt and housing law. Help and advice on fuel poverty and switching providers is also available. Ou

r fully qualified and experienced lawyers work hard to ensure that clients understand their rights as citizens, and to protect those rights. Our experienced and dedicated staff offer free advice and representation as required and the Centre has been successful in obtaining thousands of pounds in unclaimed benefits since it opened its doors forty years ago. We campaign continuously throughout the year to ensure that citizens are fully informed of their rights, and publicise our services to anyone who may have need for advice or representation. This guidance and support being readily available in a community setting is unique, and is one of the main reasons for our success rate.

Thanks again to Greig Campbell for a special evening celebrating some of the history and work from Kirkby Unemployed Centre, and for the moving words from our own Alan Kelly, a key organiser at the KUC for many years. It was great to see so many past members of the centre sharing stories and memories with each other.

Greig's project celebrates the rich history of the KUC through oral testimonies and archival materials, and is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who have conducted interviews with those involved at the centre.

One of the legacies of the unemployed centre was the many banners, and with the help of the younger project volunteers, a commemorative banner was produced, which you can see here, unveiled by Greig.

'Don't Mourn, Organise!' is an ongoing project, with further materials in the works, and we're incredibly proud to support Greig and his team with this.

Many congratulations to our newly qualified Solicitor, Esther!

Esther has now completed her Justice First Fellowship at VLC, and we are pleased to say she's staying with us within our housing team as our newest Housing Solicitor.

Throughout her fellowship, Esther has spent time within each of our departments - helping Welfare Rights clients access their legal entitlements, helping our Development team with funding applications, and finally supporting our Housing clients facing homelessness and unfair treatment.

We're all incredibly proud of her hard-work and professionalism throughout her time as JFF, and happy she's decided to stick around.

Here's to you, Esther!

We’d like to send a huge thank you to everyone at Garfield Weston Foundation
for funding our community law centre.

Your generous support means we can continue supporting those facing injustice in our community and give them the help that they need.

We truly couldn’t provide this without your help.

Our AGM details have been confirmed and we are delighted to announce that our guest speaker for the event will be David Conn, investigations correspondent for The Guardian.

David has reported on the Hillsborough Disaster and the families’ fight for justice for three decades and his work helped to establish the Hillsborough Independent Panel. He was also hugely influential in reporting and condemning the catastrophic mismanagement and policing failures during the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.

We're proud of the work we achieved and we'll be back in 2026 to continue fighting against poverty, racism, inequality and making sure that our communities have access to justice.

A huge thank you to everyone who could attend last night's Impact Report event. It was a great chance to hear from our wonderful speakers and celebrate the achievements of our advisors and staff.

Last year, we opened over 2000+ cases across the Liverpool City Region and delivered financial gains of over £4.5million for the most vulnerable in the community. None of this would be possible without the support of our incredible funders and supporters, so a big thank you to every one of them for helping make this work possible.

As well, a special thank you to Broudie Jackson Canter and Homebaked Anfield for helping make the evening possible and showing the strength of community cohesion.

If you’d like to learn more about our work, then please do read our Impact Report, which you can find here:
https://vauxhalllawcentre.org.uk/impact-2/

We would also be incredibly grateful if you would donate to our cause. Help us keep access to justice possible.

This week, we're proudly celebrating four years of our drop-in advice service at the ever-wonderful Homebaked Anfield

This service could not exist without the incredible, generous funding that Spirit of Shankly - Liverpool Supporters Union have provided over this time. Beginning as a half-day service, it now runs from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM every Monday, where our advisors offer advice and help on Welfare Rights to the community.

“Lovely, reassuring, friendly lady helped my husband fill in a form we could never have managed alone. Sensitive personal issues were handled with care. We are so grateful for this help.

We went to the drop-in at Homebaked and she saw us as soon as she had finished with the person before us. Form filled in and sent it the same day. Huge weight lifted.

Thank you.”
-Homebaked Drop-in Client

The success of the project shows just how valuable community initiatives can be to help better people’s lives. Over the course of the last four years, we've helped bring in almost one million pounds (£985,074.16) of increased income to hundreds across our city.

To Spirit of Shankly - Liverpool Supporters Union, and to our hosts Homebaked Anfield, thank you for helping keep access to justice accessible to all in our community.
