A fabulous day yesterday when Upper Eden History Society celebrated its 40th anniversary!! Two founder members, the current chairman and a former chairman were there to cut the cake. A talk about our online catalogue, two short videos, lunch and a talk about Viking life – what a day. Thanks to everyone who joined us and a huge THANK YOU to the committee members who helped with the organisation.

A moving and well-attended ceremony yesterday, 15 August 2025, as Kirkby Stephen remembered VJ Day at the War Memorial. organised by Churches Together, the Silver Band played, the Parish Church choir sang and the scouts raised and lowered their flags appropriately. HM's Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria sent a wreath to be laid. We then walked into the church for readings and songs about local men who served in the Far East. We finished with tea and cakes, using recipes printed In 1948 – 2 recipes from the wife of one of the men mentioned in the service. Thank you to all who took part in this memorable occasion.

Please join Churches Together and other local organisations in REMEMBERING THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF VJ DAY – Friday 15 August, 6pm, War Memorial, Kirkby Stephen.
Several men from Upper Eden served in the Far East during World War Two, and at least one of our young men died there. A simple commemoration will be held on VJ Day, 15 August. Not a victory celebration because war is still very much present in the world, but a gathering to remember, reflect and discover more about the men who served.

After the formal commemoration and laying of a wreath, we shall process into the parish church for music and a few readings, followed by tea and cake. Members of the church congregation and the WI are baking cakes and biscuits from recipes written in 1948 by some of the wives, mothers and sisters of Upper Eden men who fought in the war.
