Kirkburton Bellringers:May update.
The next month will be a busy one for Kirkburton Bellringers as we have two special occasions to ring for and we also see the start of the wedding season.
Ringing times will be as follows

Sunday 4th May: Sunday Service Ringing 9.45 to 10.30.
Thursday 8th May. Ringing for the 8th Anniversary of VE Day: 6.30 to 7.15.
Saturday 10th May: Wedding ringing from11.15
Sunday 11th May; Sunday Service Ringing. 9.45 to 10.30
Sunday 18th May: Sunday Service Ringing 9.45 to 10.30. Quarter Peal (6 Bells) to mark Bell Sunday. 4pm to 5pm.
Sunday 25th May: No morning service.
Saturday 31st May: Wedding ringing from 12.30.
Practice Ringing as normal: Wednesday 7.00 to 8.30pm

We have had a busy month. The new ringing simulator for training purposes has been installed, and can now work on all eight bells, unlike the old simulator which only worked on the front six. We put this to good use over Holy Week with a series of training sessions which were supported not only by our own ringers, but ringers from other towers in the area.
Our monthly quarter peal attempt was successful, and this qualified Darren for the ART Training scheme Level 3. All three recruits we taught after the return from COVID have now attained this level and are becoming very competent ringers.
Our newest recruit Rachel is now ringing for Sunday services. Sue and Mark, and two of our regular practice night helpers Phil and Alison attended the Hereford Ringing course over the weekend after Easter.

As usual, if anyone is interested in joining us please contact us on [email protected].
If any one is looking for a Skill at Duke of Edinburgh Award, bellringing can be used at any of the levels.

Kirkburton Bellringers; March update.

Service ringing and practices were maintained throughout February. We rang a successful quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles on 4th February to mark Candlemas.
Members of our band were also involved in successful quarter peals at Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Armitage Bridge, and have supported area ringing meetings at New Mill and Almondbury.
Tower Captain Mark completed his Level 2 course run by the Association of Ringing teachers and now awaits his assessment and accreditation for full membership of the organisation.
We have also received the parts for the upgrade of our training simulator which we hope to install in march. This will provide us with a whole range of training options from ringers using it individually to being able to simulate ringing on all eight bells.

Ringing in March will follow our normal pattern with one exception.

March 5th; Ash Wednesday. Instead of our normal practice we will be attempting a quarter peal (six bells) following the communion service. Ringing 7.30 to 8.30pm.

All other ringing at normal times.
Practice Ringing: Wednesday 7pm to 8.30pm
Sunday Services: 9.45 to 10.30.

There will be two quarter peal attempts in February.

Wednesday 12th February (8 bells) 11.00 am to 12pm. Specially arranged with a band made up of ringers from Kirkburton, Wakefield and Beverley in memory of a mutual friend and ringer who passed away last year.

If you would like to have a quarter peal dedicated to a personal or village event please contact us and should it be successful we can supply a commemorative certificate which can be downloaded.

Practice nights continue to be well supported and we ring all eight bells most sundays. Our two new learners Sam and Rachel are progressing well and are now ringing on open bells on practice night.

Kirkburton Bell RIngers Update from Mark Sheridan: December 2024.

It's now our busiest time of the year with quite a few additions and alterations to our normal ringing schedule in the run up to christmas.
We had a successful November, the highlight being the successful half muffled quarter peal we rang on remembrance sunday. We were delighted with the positive comments we received on social media as a result. The bells do sound beautiful but haunting when rung with the muffles. As a result of ringing this quarter one of our ringers, Jackie, has now achieved level 4 of the national "Learning the Ropes" course. We also have two new learners, Rachael and Sam who are having lessons in bell handling on the simulator and should be starting to ring with the band in the near future.
A group of us also enjoyed a ringing outing "over the hill" ringing at Saddleworth and Friezeland.
We will signal the start of the Christmas season with a quarter peal attempt on Advent Sunday.

In the early part of the month much of the ringing will take place half muffled as we are commemorating events remembering those who have departed this year, and those who have lost their lives in conflict.. A leather patch tied over one side of the clapper creates an echo effect, so the bells will sound slightly different on these occasions.

Kirkburton Bellringers. July August update.

Kirkburton bellringers had a very busy June. We rang for the revival of the Kirkburton Sing, and for the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings. This was commemorated with a quarter peal of 1334 changes of Kent Treble Bob Major. We also welcomed members of the Central Branch of the Yorkshire Association of change ringers for a Saturday afternoon meeting.
Tower captain Mark Sheridan did a talk for the Kirkburton local history society. Research for this has produced some new information about ringing at Kirkburton in the 19th century.

July and August ringing will follow our usual pattern.
Sunday Ringing. 9.45 to 10.30 am
Practice Wednesday. 7.00pm to 8.30pm

Friday July 19th. Wedding ringing from 12.15pm.
Sunday August 25th. Quarter Peal attempt. 5.00pm to 6pm. No morning service ringing.

Looking ahead we will be having our regular tower open day on September 14th as part of the Heritage Weekend celebration. More details in the September update. We are hoping to take on some new learners. For young people undertaking DOE award, bellringing can count in the skill section.
Contact us on [email protected] if you would like a taster session.

BELLRINGING TO MARK THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF D DAY AND OPERATION OVERLORD.

As well as joining in in the national Commemoration ringing on June 6th, we are planning to attempt a quarter peal on June 7th from 2pm to 3pm in memory of all who gave their lives or took part in this momentous historical event.

" On the Seventh of June 1944, my father Sergeant Ray " Sherry" Sheridan (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) was one of thousands of soldiers who took part in the invasion, landing on Sword Beach, some 24 hours after the initial landings. In the following months, he was involved in the battle for Caen, and the subsequent liberation of Northern France, Belgium, and Holland. Fortunately, he survived to return home to my mother, who he had met and married while stationed here in Yorkshire. My father lived until 2009. He always felt very strongly that while the commemorations rightly focused on D Day itself, it was often forgotten that the invasion continued for many months afterwards. This quarter peal attempt will be dedicated to all those who served."

Mark Sheridan, Tower captain, Kirkburton Bellringers.

The ringing will be recorded on a national database of all ringing for the anniversary. If you would like us to add the name of a Normandy Veteran to the dedication please email us on [email protected] before 6th June.

PLEASE SHARE THIS POST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, OR TELL PEOPLE WHY THE BELLS ARE RINGING ON JUNE 7th.
